Reverse Lock Out

I have a manual 99' tj and whenever i go to put it in reverse after i drive around, the reverse lock-out does not disengage to let me go into reverse. However, if i turn my jeep off and turn it back on, it goes into reverse no problem. I have tried putting it into first and then going into reverse, wiggling the stick back and fourth a couple times, revving the engine a little bit and then trying to put it in reverse but nothing works. Anyone have this same problem?

When was the last time your transmission was serviced?

Not sure when it was last serviced, bought it off a guy a few months ago.

I would change out the oil in the transmission. If you don't know the service history. It's easy and I can ensure that the right oil has been used. Something like Red Line MT-90 or Pennzoil Synchromesh need to be used. Stay away from GL-5 products.

Try shifting into a forward gear like 1st and then immediately, without moving or taking your foot off the clutch shifting directly into Reverse

I've always heard not to change the transmission fluid if you have a lot of miles on the vehicle and if you were unsure if/when it has ever been serviced. Any truth to this?
