Rip in my drivers seat

So after year of sliding in and out of my jeep, it has created a rip in the side of my drivers seat. It's along the side seam, about 6 inches long.

I believe it can be sewn back together. And I don't know how to sew. My wife can a little. And she is willing to give it a try.

The problem is, I'm unsure if regular thread will hold up. Has anyone had to sew up their seats before? Any ideas of the type of material I can use?

It doesn't have to be pretty. Eventually I'll just put a nice seat cover over it.

Not sure a regular thread would hold up but I'm surely not an expert in the field.
I will tell you that i have used Spiderwire fishing line for sewing items that needed reinforced with great results.

Yeah, fishing line or plastic type thread would be better. You might want to find an upholstery store or a store that sells upholstering materials. Usually seating uses heavy duty thread, etc.

If you want it to look good, take the seat upholstery off and then sew it like factory. It doesn't take much (I just took my fabric off to install heated seats). And it will look like factory when you are done. It will need to be flipped inside out to sew it though.

Any store selling sewing thread will have Upholstery thread. This is what I have always used but mine is not exposed to the elements. Wal mart carries it.
