RMS vs Oil Pan Gasket

For those of you that are more tech savvy than me, which is most of you...

Can an oil pan gasket leak look like a Rear Main Seal leak? I was one again cleaning oil off the skid plate today and noticed the oil residue on the pan, leading back towards the transmission bell. I'm wondering if the leak that I've always had since I bought the Jeep is actually from the oil pan.

I recently replaced the RMS on my 98 4 banger. (was leaking) Also replaced the oil pan gasket a few weeks later. Found out the oil pan is rusted at the top lip, so still leaking. And there is still another leak higher up. (not head gasket...perhaps)
Moral of the story...be prepared to just replace everything.

Make sure its not leaking down from the valve cover gasket.

I found that my oil pan bolts loosened up on both of my recent jeeps and tightening em back up stopped the seeping oil.
