Rust Advise

Donno, the frame by the tail pipe (rear view) looks pretty shakey, sorta like mine :(
LOL, I'm sorry to hear that.
Yeah, I agree, but I can't tell if it's rusted through and cracked and or if it's flaking rust. Really gotta see these rustbelt jeeps live and go over em'. These guys from Arizona, California, and Texas will make you sick with their frames, they look like they just came out of the factory. Some of ours up here are decent, but one with that much rust will be difficult to work on no matter if the frame is good or not, that's for sure. If it was cheap enough and I verified that the frame was good, no major structural body issues, and could drive it home, like i said, i'd have to consider it for around $3k-ish.

We’ve certainly seen a lot worse than this. I can see no sign of frame rust through, but it may just be one season away from that. I wouldn’t want it, certainly not for $16k, but I bet it sells for a lot more than the $3-4k that some of you are predicting.

The $3-4k probably came from me. It wasn't a prediction, it was what I'd be willing to pay for it just with the information given. We still haven't seen the rest of the rig. Oh, and yeah, you're absolutely right, it will go for a lot more than that. I agree, it could be a season away, or a lot of this could be cosmetic crustiness on the outside of the frame. For $16k I wouldn't bother, but if someone were to go bang on it with a hammer and slide a camera thru the rails, it could be good. Almost all the frames up here look a little crappy on the outside, but they can be good. I should probably take some pics of mine and post them for an example. That being said, don't try to remove those upper rear shock bolts on any of em'!

Ok ty everyone im still learning how a good one will look. how about this jeeps frame?
There is some rust I ca see starting but for a 16 yr old jeep i would think this is normal or well taken care of.

The LJ looks a lot more worthwhile to go and look at, but some of the rust around the exterior holes seems a little concerning. The most important thing to remember is the inside of the frame is what rusts out, so if you can confirm that the inside is smooth and rust free then you should be good.

It is nearly impossible to tell the condition of a frame from just looking at photos of the outside, but I would think that one may have some noticeable interior rust, but it also might not. It is worth looking at if it is within a reasonable drive IMO.

Yeah, that one looks a lot better, but as stated above, you gotta see it live. Get in and under there. Borescopes are a huge help to run the frame rails, stick your fingers in all over the place and feel for rust scale. You'd be surprised how nice they can look on the outside but be crappy on the inside. If i'ts local tho certainly worth checking out. How much?
Edit: pay special attention to where the skid bolts on for this one, I didn't see pics of that area.

That one is about a 6 hr drive each way.

I'm not sure on the price, but being an unlimited (LJ) it might be reasonable as I understand they bring more. I am of the thought that you should be able to get a good TJ with the 4.0 for about 8k as long as its not a Rubi. I've also seen some good deals but you got to be ready to pounce. A friend grabbed a 99 TJ sport last year with 70k miles on it for 6k with a brand new soft top included. Not a spec of rust on it, it was originally from AZ.
