Savvy Taillight?

I started installing my new taillights today and was able to get the drivers side done. My problem is that the housing doesn’t sit flush against the body. It has an even 1/16-1/8in gap. I’m worried about dust, dirt & gravel getting behind there. Is this gap normal?

Pull the light off and smack the dimples from the original threaded hole back in slightly below flush.
