Searching for tires for the wet rocks of the PNW

Do you have any idea why engineers wouldn't sipe their tires this way from the factory?

They could advertise longer tread life which would sell the tires and a cooler running tire would carry it’s own benefits as well.

Actually I do know why. First off engineers aren't the ones building the tires they design them. Second there is a huge difference between factory siping and siping a tire after it has been molded. Factory siping is not new to the tire industry. It's been around for a LONG time. Generally it's used on dedicated snow tires and high mileage touring type tires. Selective siping offers the customer a choice without forcing the added price down their throats. Third, there's a reason @Wildman and I both talked about only siping part of the tread. Factory siping usually extends 75% or so into the tread. For off road use that would cause a LOT of increased tread chunking.

I'm closing my eyes and trying to visualize them. They look great!

Daaaaang it. That's the best deal around. Buy 3 get 1 free on BB's. If I hadn't just ordered an Atlas I'd do it.
Unfortunately it’s only the Mickey Atz and Mtz. I wanted the BB too.
They do have the 37x12.50R17 in load range D on the buy 3 get one free sale and they're actually cheaper then the load range C per tire.

$430.45 each buy 3 get one free, load range D

$487.99 not on the buy 3 get one free sale, load range C

Edit: ok so those links didn't work...

If you copy and paste it it works...

I was just hoping for the buy 3 get 1free for the BB(25% off). I was between the BB and the Atz. It’s significantly cheaper going the ATZ route with this sale for the tire size I’m shopping.

I’m confused 4WP is ripping you off with the buy 3 get one free.

$463/tire at 4WP

$266/tire at SummitRacing

In my case

33x12.5x15
Atzp3 are 202.36
Bajas are 257.99

atzp3 x 5 = 760 after discount
Baja x 5 = 1290

The only 35x12.5r15 tire I found a discount on is the mtz

35x12.5x15
Mtz are 233
Mtz x 5 = 873 after discount

Less if you Opt for 4x instead of 5x.

edit: In my previous post I was referring to what I was looking at not OPs preference. I didn’t realize the sizes I was lookin at weren’t necessarily on sale but others were

What do you guys think about the two options for 37" (17" rim) options:
1. D rated, 37x12.5, 77lbs
2. E rated, 37x13.5, 84lbs

I think 12.5 is preferred but there's an almost new set of 37x13.5 on Craigslist. Do you think they 13.5's would be worse in anything? Does E rating change much on the rocks?

(1) Maybe, but I think you would be hard pressed to measure the effect of the 1" difference in section width. I know several people who run 13.50 wide tires and have yet to hear any of them complain that they wish their tires were a tad more narrow - that includes the guys who like snow wheeling.

(2) Not as much as Internet jeep forums would have you believe. Ask @mrblaine if you want an impartial, objective response as to whether it really matters and if so, how much.

7 lbs per tire is 28 lbs total weight you're adding to your rig. I don't think there is much performance difference between a D & E ply tire but I could be wrong. Since you can get the 13.5's cheaper I say go for it. Run them a few time and see how you like them. Then if you figure out you don't get a different tire and sell those. Might even make a profit.

My personal experience with the radial Irocks is varied. I loved my first set. So when the time came I replaced them with the same tire. But this new set I have mixed feelings about honestly. They balance out fine with internal balance beads. But not so great with stick on weights. Traction on road is fine in the rain. Snow is fine but ice isn’t the best. But it’s to be expected. They are as quiet or quieter than other mud terrain tires I’ve Owned in the past. Do decent in everything I’ve used them for. Wet rocks, dry rocks, sand and mud but this set I seem to be chunking more than my last set. Although I have gone a lot lower in pressure and on crawl ratio with this set so spinning them when bound up easier. I still like the tire though. I’m running a 36x13.50-15 on a beadlock. I went with the 36” because it measures out taller than the 37x12.50-15. I think I’ll be going with 40x13.50-17 Baja boss when my new axles wheels and tires go on.

Awesome reply about the Radial IRocks. I have my fingers crossed that these Biased ply ones work as well or close to your radial versions. I'm thinking when it's time for my next set of tires it will also be time to change my wheels to a easier to find size of wheels and tires.

Why baja boss over iroks?

Why baja boss over iroks?
I have three sets of friends running them with great success over the last year or two since they were released. We don’t get tons of mud in CO or Utah were most of my wheeling is done. So the closer tread design is fine for the minor self clearing We need. Most of my time is spent on rocks. I would rather do sticky’s but I will still drive on pavement occasionally even once the 40”s and ORI’s and new axles are installed. Mostly linking trails in CO or while in Moab otherwise I’d get the sticky’s.
