I’ve posted about this before. You need a good lawyer and good business insurance, cause if he’s stolen from your customers, they aren’t suing him…
And @LukesfirstJeep is spot on, think of all the others you employ, you’re not letting him down, you’re protecting your family, your business, and everyone else who depends on a paycheck from you…and in that order.

You are doing the correct things . Ultimately , it has come down to you are the man that stands between good and evil . You didn't ask for this position , however it is now your responsibility to protect your family , business , customers . You are on the right path , stay strong my brother.

Am I saddened, disgusted, disappointed over losing a faithful worker to the dark power of drugs, the violation of trust and all the hassle?
U betcha.
But I’m ready to get a little more involved in the field, lose the dead weight and negativity.

Even though this will mean more in field work , it will speak volumes to the rest of your crews . You have moved in the correct direction . I bet this will be more encouraging to you , in ways you can't imagine . You stood for good , now move forward with your business , family and customers . You got this Andy , and I'm personally grateful to hear of somebody doing the right thing at a difficult cost to them . May God be with you as you move forward brother . Dirk
Thank you I started noticing a sense of exhilaration once I started to calm down and set my course-
Let me tell you guys what really happens and I’ve even said this about other people and it applies to me as well-
Somebody comes along that you know good and well is a rough character and you’re trying to get all these things done for somebody and trying to make a profit and you take a chance on them and if they perform halfway good you end up starting to get to know them a little bit and you override your instincts about their bad side and you focus on their good points because they’re giving you something in return . You can get feelings for them, and hope that you are helping them.
It clouds your judgment.
I grew to love this guy overtime and he could’ve worked here until the end of his career and that was really the plan, but he also came with a lot of baggage and never did really fit the image that I had from a company.
It is the weirdest thing most of the time when you see somebody that is meticulous with their work they will be fastidious with their vehicle and how they dress and everything else-
Not him
He could build a mantle that looks like it belongs in the Biltmore House, and will be showing 3 inches of butt crack and leave a mess and it will have a sleeve of 18 gauge brads sitting on the top of it and an oil spot in the driveway when he leaves.
I sort of felt like a hypocrite for years because I’m real clean cut and people get the impression that the workers are going to be that way and that’s just not the case with all my guys ….. and believe me I’ve said hey dude we’ve got to go home right now and get you a clean shirt and all kinds of things with workers. This particular gang which is the father and he also has a son that still works for us, they are just sloppy.
The son is thrilled this has happened because he’s one of his father’s out of control and drug lifestyle to get checked.
At the same, despite all this, time we grew our capability and he made my company better and I’ll always be grateful for that and I will deeply wish he had the character that we needed.
Right now, I don’t even plan a replacement. I just plan to grow some people from the inside. Adjust the volume of work. Keep the quality stellar and move ahead.
I even got a good call from a forum members- “hey dude, are you trying to get yourself killed?” and they made a good point about not letting the cat out out of the bag until the charges were filed.
Anyway, everything is OK. The former worker is really starting to be honest about the situation. He’s realizing playing dumb did not work.
In one sense, it doesn’t matter that’s not going to save his job, but it is appreciated.

Best of luck with the situation. I had a family member that’s an alcoholic. Thankfully he got his shit together before it was too late. Hopefully your guy can as well.
I have a brother who is a workaholic. If you mention Work, he will go get drunk.
Well, everything finally calmed down and I met with law-enforcement today and you know when it was all done. I just never felt like my guy wanted to really be honest about what was going on.
And I got to thinking about over the years every time something went off the rails he just kind of shrugged his shoulders until it blew over…. I remember one instance where some kitchen cabinets were put in about an inch out of level… the kind of thing that happens when somebody is medicated and not paying attention. This kind of thing happened over and over and over.
Anyway, he’s going to have to deal with law-enforcement and I’m glad I took the position on not moving forward working because there’s no way you could work with somebody that you’re having investigated for theft in my opinion- I can see something like that going on in a big organization but in something small like our company is just not going to happen.
Anyway, it has been very educational and I feel like ultimately it may lead to some good things.
