Went look at what I thought was a 2006 LJR for sale at a large Toyota dealership in Irvine this weekend probably 100 mile round trip from my house with cash ready to go

Looks like a really nice jeep this is the ad below . When I got there all they had was a tired neglected red tj with a rusty garmin roof rack that they took in on a trade in

There manager didn’t seem to concerned when I told him it’s straight up false advertising, he called it a “stock photo”

actually found this jeep below that had recently sold on an auction site , and remember seeing it in the for sale finds on this site a while back 100% the same Jeep

Already filed a report with bbb , it’s 100% photoshopped from the cars and bid site , the first picture is there ad on tru cars. second picture is the real from cars and bids from a recent sale

They have it listed on multiple online sales sites

Somebody explain this to me-

What is it with the car industry?

Reputation wise they have ruined themselves.

I don’t know of any other industries that comes close.

People hate them.

People slip on car lots at night to look at cars just because they are afraid of the people that work there.

How have they taken something that Americans absolutely love and turned into this?

I really want to know.

I mean why is corruption so widespread through that particular industry. Why do they have to use their tactics to sell something that people want to buy?

I’m not saying that every car dealer or sales person is a crook. I even worked as a car salesman for a short period of time when I was younger. I work at a small used dealership that had a phenomenal reputation and sold nice cars. And they did shady dealings. I saw a girl purchase a car with 160,000 miles and it was sold with paperwork that said 60,000 miles.

I live about 35 minutes away from an area called Albertville that is famous for irreputable used car dealers. For about 8 miles there is a car lot every block seemingly. I don’t know how many people in that area have gone to prison for rolling back odometers and Lord knows what else.

What is unique about the car industry that makes people do this?

I was a dealer tech for 15 years and I really disliked 90% of the sales staff. The other 10% were ok folks and those were usually the ones that had years of longevity and return customers. The 90% were the quick turnover dipshits.
It’s an environment that seems to attract the shyters. Maybe it’s the nature of their pay structure, I just know that they (the 90%) always wanted my labor for a “favor” or “hook me up bro” and that equaled me not getting paid. As a 100% commission tech, I learned to hate those clowns. By the last 5 years of my dealer life I would just tell most of them to fuck off as soon as they asked me for anything.

Commission car sales pit the customer and the sales person against each other- No question.

And the minute the management of the business gives the sales people flexibility over the selling price - It is every man for himself.

At the same time you take a technician and you had to hustle and the customer would get his car back faster and with a reduced chance of a callback.

It is amazing how money introduced into business scenarios can have a dynamic affect in so many ways.

I have people that work less when they make more money.

I have people that treat their job better because they make more money.

I have people that it doesn’t matter they are a piece of crap no matter how you pay them.

Thankfully so then they are a piece of crap that shows up every day.

Colorado you can't buy cars on Sundays. Supposedly the law was written for that reason, so you could go look without being hassled by sales people. Now all lots are locked so cars don't get stolen

Used car dealers should be trusted about as much as politicians.

FIFY ;)

I didn't work in the industry for 15 years, but my last job as body/paint technician was with a new car dealer. @Claytone hit the nail on the head. Also gave me great insight into how the dealer makes their money and how badly the customer typically gets it in the ass (both sales and service).

It can be a shitshow for sure. Corporate ownership has really changed the business. All those management types are from the sales side and definitely embody "The Bobs" from office space.
I don't miss working on cars in that environment. It's been 8 years and counting and I wouldn't ever go back.

Pharmaceuticals is worse, they're just not as widely hated because they poison us with the blessing of the United States government.

When looking for my LJ I took a day off to fly to the next state ready to buy a “gem” that the sales guy said was rust free and well cared for. The dealer specializes in classic cars and should know what a vehicle enthusiast will expect. The pictures were carefully “curated” to look good.

I get there and within 10 minutes I am looking for a flight home. The hard top had a crack, apparently had been dropped. The engine leaked oil like crazy and when I gave the frame the finger test it came out as orange as if I’d been in a bag of cheetoes.

Major lesson learned for me to get very specific pics but I guess in this case pics of the right Jeep helps!

Care to elaborate? I'm currently used car shopping, trying to find an individual selling, but these used car dealers are overwhelming with marketing, which is what my wire sees the most.
