Shifter won't drop cleanly into drive after transmission swap

2001 TJ auto just got new 32RH transmission and transfer case. Drives fine but when I’m putting it drive it doesn’t always “click” in. It stays in neutral even though the indicator is at D. I need to go a little past, to 2, then back up and it’s fine.

Sounds like a little fine tuning is needed. Should I start at the shifter in the cabin, or underneath?

Sounds like the shift cable is binding or its length needs to be adjusted where it attaches to the transmission. It shows how in the Factory Service Manual you can download on this website for free.
