Side Window defrost question

On my Jeep, air blows out of the top side window vent on every setting of the climate control system except "off." Is this normal? The system swaps from floor, to front vents, to wind shield defrost as it normally should. At each of these settings, air also flows out of the side window defrost vents. The speed of the air changes with the blower speed as expected. I have included a picture to show which went I'm talking about.

Again, just wondering if this is normal. I would expect the air on defrost mode, but not the other modes.

On in June too. So was the side air vents on my last Nissan PU. If you need heat anywhere in the vehicle then defrosting the side windows is for safety. You notice when the front glass starts to get frosty or foggy. But you don't notice the side glass until you need to turn at an intersection. So you try a quick rub and go. This way you will keep the sides clear and avoid the tractor trailer coming towards you.
