Spare Tire Question

I currently run Toyo Open Country MTs, which are 295/70/r17. I'm looking at replacing them with the same make and model, but at a slightly different size of 285/75/ r17. The new tires have a diameter that is about a half inch larger. It would be great if I could keep my old spare and buy only 4 new tires. My question is whether that half inch would hurt my gears or something else if I need to run the old spare in the back.

If your rear axle has a limited slip differential like the factory Tracloc or an aftermarket Detroit Truetrac LSD you really should try to keep all the tire sizes the same.
