The studs for the four wheels on my '99 TJ are 1/2" x 20.... but what about the spare tire studs? I recently bought new tires and was going to put the spare on the back, but the new wheel lugs would not spin on the studs. The tire shop left the spare off because it wouldn't fit (I needed to buy a spacer), and I bought all new wheel lugs to replace the old ones, so they tossed all the old ones away (so I didn't have a way of looking at the old ones to see what size they were).

Are the spare studs different than the regular tires?

It's just the stock one. I installed a spacer so I could put my new spare (31") on the carrier.

You have something odd going on. I've been mixing up the lug nuts between the stock carrier and the axles for years.

The solution was to use a 1/2"x20 die and thread it out again. Not sure if a previous owner forced on a wrong sized nut/lug, but the first few threads were way off.... I really had to sort of force the die a bit, but afterwards the lugs went on like butter....
