01 jeep tj sport. Just bought the 5th tire to match, 31x12.5 15s and it doesn't fit on the stock spare tire holder. What's the appropriate fix?

I have a 33x10.5 R15 spare mounted on a stock carrier but it’s on an aftermarket wheel with less backspacing than factory. That pushes the tire further out and the snubbers have to be extended to make contact. It’s possible your tire at 12.5 is too thick for the stock wheel to mount without an aftermarket carrier or wheel with less backspacing. Do you get any rubbing when turning?

The tire is probably hitting the snubbers. Remove them and try again. If it fits, you can cut the snubbers to match.
Might need to add a wheel spacer to the stock spare tire carrier. And trim the snubbers. And decide if you need tailgate reinforcement for the extra weight.

If I go this route, does tailgate need reinforced? ....what about the 3rd brake light? looks like has holes to mount accessories to.
That was something I wondered about as well. How does one decide if reinforcement needed and is this hard to properly accomplish?
Morryde makes a kit. I think it's worth it.
Some folks install supports on bumpers and such to hold up the tire so the weight isn't always on the hinge and tailgate.

Reinforcement shouldn't be required with 31s.
If you're concerned, you can get just the hinges instead of the whole (Morryde) kit.
12.5 wide?
That's the real issue.
