Tell me about Florida

I grew up and lived on the Gulf Coast (within 30 miles of the actual coast) so I well know about living in humidity, being surrounded by marshes and such. I visited Mom one July after living in Arizona for 20 years. Everyone was complaining about the heat and humidity, and while helping Mom out in her back yard it didn’t feel bad. My thought was hell it’s only 95 degrees, that’s 20 degrees cooler than Phoenix. It really did not feel as bad as I remembered growing up. I thought it might be a fluke but a coworker who visits his folks in Florida told me the same thing.

As for drinking beer in the shaded pool, like I said that’s fine for a week vacation but these brutal summer temperatures last 5 months. Every year.

Oh yeah, my pool temp is currently 93 degrees.

Down here in South East Arizona, our above ground pool got up to 88 degrees. I think we got up to 101 today. Supposed to be 100 tomorrow and then 91 on Monday.

Yea, its hot. Yea, its humid. I can more or less tolerate both - but what I have problems with is that GLARING sun! When it disappears behind a cloud, its pretty nice. When it comes back out, I go inside.

Yeah, the sun is brutal. The low humidity means there’s no water vapor in the atmosphere to absorb the solar radiation, and no clouds to block the sun, so it’s like standing under a broiler.

This made me remember one time visiting Mom on the Gulf Coast. We came out of the grocery store one evening and while I was waiting to get in the car I was looking at the sun as it was just above the line of pine trees. I suddenly realized I was looking at the sun and my eyes didn’t explode in flames. That’s how much sunlight was absorbed / blocked by the many layers of thin clouds and abundant atmospheric moisture.

Im a huge motorcycle fan, but all my bikes are air cooled and I wouldnt wanna sit in traffic on an air cooled bike in 115* for long. Forget about takin the top off rhe Jeep or droppin the top off a Convertible. Likely to get burnt by the time I got home

You poor sum bitch. We used to keep towels in my dads convertible Corvette (black leather) for that reason, and also because the top leaked with anything more than a mist.

Dry heat, vs wet heat if I had a choice I'll take dry heat.

I agree up to a point. I lived on the Gulf Coast for decades so I very well know heat and humidity. We didn’t have AC in elementary school, and at home ran the AC from Easter to Thanksgiving.

Dry heat is OK up to around 105, but 118 is a whole different territory. I will take 95 and any humidity level over that. I visit family during the summer heat and humidity and think “this is only 95 degrees, it isn’t that bad.” My patio pavers get to 155 degrees and can cause serious burns to bare feet. That doesn’t happen on the Gulf Coast.

The neighbor's 8-year-old son was reportedly outside with him when his dad was shot.

Sounds like a typical FL story. Definitely not condoning what he did, but if ANYONE pulls a gun on me and tells me to stop what I'm doing, I'm going to stop. Walking towards that person is not something I'm going to do unless he says "come here or I'm going to shoot you." The correct action would be to do what he says, and call the police to report the incident. Don't be a hero, especially in front of an 8yo.

Also have to take into consideration the adage that says the older I get, the less life in prison is a deterrent.
