You ever have a friend help you? But it doesn't quite work out?

I had to buy a part for my Jeep. It had some rust. I showed it to a friend. And he offered to strip it for me.

Mind you he's a close friend. Known him 30+ years. Solid dude. Really great woodworker. And hes in the process of dismantling his old truck and completely striping it and redoing it.

I say all this cause a couple days later i go over and pick up the part. And it looks like someone took an angle grinder to it. Lol. I swear to god. And its a prominent part on the outside of my Jeep. I mean he stripped every last piece of paint off it. And a good amount of the metal. Lmao. 😅

I like my friend to much to ever say anything. So I'm painting the part and putting it on anyway.

That's what a good friend does. Right?

Still laughing my ass off. 😆

I have a couple friends like that. I'm very careful about who I ask to work on my rig because I'm so particular about it, and they aren't nearly as careful or particular with THEIR stuff, let alone mine.

What kind of part was it?

Get out the sander!
It would be easier to just buy a new bumper. 😄 Its the stock one. I paid $30 for it locally. But i couldnt wait to find another one. My original bumper was trashed when I rear ended someone.

Eventually i want a dirtworx anyway.

He's just not a metal worker obviously. His families originally from Finland. They built boats.

God. Im still laughing. And shaking my head. Alot of it got covered with primer and paint. And luckily there is alot if stuff on my bumper. So it won't be to noticeable. Just not a part i would normally use in its current condition. Lmao.

AH psssssh i stripped my stock one and welded ring mounts. fudged up the holes and just left them but repainted the whole thing. Figure a few extra holes will be fine.

Down the road, when you're getting ready to do something else say to him, "check out this cool flapper disc I found at Home Depot!"

lol, Showed a friend a real cool old Case single blade knife I found under a seat redoing an interior once.
He say's, hey let me sharpen it for you. Okay??
It was ground down to a fucking nub when he gave it back!

I wouldn't keep the results of his action a complete secret from him. I'd just let him know how his wood working skills don't seem to apply well to metal and you won't hold that against him. It may stop him from "helping" fix metal for someone that isn't as good a friend as you are. Maybe if you're lucky, he'll make you a perfect new bumper out of mahogany. Actually a wooden TJ grille (with round turn signals) would be nice to hang on the wall.

Oh. Hes making a wooden dash for his truck. And console. Its going to be incredible. He really does have skills. Just not with metal. Although his truck overhaul is going quite nicely.

Lmfao! Right?!

When i showed him my bumper he got out his box of abrasive tools and wire wheels. I figured hed use a wire wheel just on the rust and leave as much factory paint as he could. But one of the things in the box was a big angle grinder disc that was that spider web stuff. I dont know what they are called. But i think tjey are meant for stripping railroad sections. Lol.

That’s a good story… the older I get the less I ask for help from friends… it never gets done like you want it to!!😂

Story time..in my younger days I restored old mustangs and one In particular had stripped out sill plate screw holes..I asked a friend of mine what he would do and he said "I'll bring over my welder and close them up and you can Re drill them"...I say "ok sounds good"..he comes.over and is doing alot of welding and says "all done", packs his welder up and off he goes. Needless to say I about shit myself myself I I laid my eyes on the giant globs of weld he left on each hole...im not kidding I had to take a cut off wheel and cut the bird crap welds off and then grind them smooth..then to top it off once I spent probably hours grinding I went to install the #6 or #8 screws and they just stripped again..

Yeah. That is horrible.

I have had a neighbor borrow a dead blow. He destroyed it. It was my grandfather’s and yes. My bad for lending it. It had no value. But he laughed and didn’t care.

And I kept his drill bits. He left them at my place and I didn’t make an effort to return them.

10 years later, he still knows. Hasn’t talked to me since.

🤷‍♂️

That’s perfect. Keep it awkward. My wife handled a “problem” client for me this week. Ended up telling him to keep his parts and not pay PLUS called him an asshole. Both the free parts and his butthurt feelings should keep him away for awhile
