What I'm looking for is an on the ground report of the conditions of the job market, weather, stuff to do, cost of living, cost of housing, schooling, and recreation.

I moved to Lewiston Idaho around 1 year ago with my now fiance for work. Her work. We both moved here from Montana. Lewiston is not like Boise, it is small and it borders Washington state with the snake river. Washington is frowned upon here though....But it's not that bad in the eastern side same with Oregon in the east.

I like it here so far, it is not Montana. But I am still free here and recreation is good. ATI is located here(CCI,Speer, ammunition ETC). I work in the Automotive Field and so does my lady. I believe Idaho is a good place to hide, outside of Boise, which I also do not mind visiting but would prefer not to live there.

The Job market here depends on what you do. Depending on what you do I could get you a Job here at my work possibly, but its Automotive soo. We have a recent Cali refugee here at work and he is still doing cartwheels of Joy with how much better it is here for him.

Housing is lower cost here as are taxes. The elevation is low here in town (750ft) but raises quickly if you leave the valley bottom, it is difficult to access alot of places here due to no real interstate running through and probably never will. But Spokane is 1.5hrs away and Boise is 5hrs, weather permitting. Fire is a real problem as it was in Montana.

The winter is not too bad here in town. But that low elevation goes away quickly if you head anywhere from town and the snowy cold returns in winter. The elevation raises from 750ft to 1400FT between my work and home which is 5 miles away.

The hunting is excellent here. I do personally have access to properties which makes mine even easier. But public hunting is still good. I am not aware of the schooling conditions as I do not have any children in school here.

I do not share the "stay out" attitude most Idahoans do towards Californian's such as yourself. The fact you ask on TJF and are holding an AR in your avatar you would be welcomed by me. Welcomed to remove your California compliant pieces on your rifle and Join America. Possibly buy a Jet-boat and some 100 Round Surefire mags and a suppressor and perform quiet mag dumps while blasting Ted Nugent while full throttling down the Snake river.

The Jeep population is strong here. Lot's of TJ's YJ's and CJ's. Lot's of lifted coal rolling Bro's here also, but they are ok for the most part also.

I say you consider Idaho.

Are the winters in Montana as bad as I've heard? (Brutal cold and snowed in weeks at a time)

Is housing as bad there in your part of Idaho as it is in the Boise area?

I love Oregon. Not the politics or property taxes. I never ventured as far North as Washington. I did consider a lateral move job-wise once when I saw that a lot of agencies up there allow beards and duty belt suspenders.

Interesting fact about Lewiston ID. Probably the Ammo Capital of the US. Speer, CCI and several other off brands are headquartered there. Also the company that creates the autoloaders for the ammo industry is there too. Seekins Precision rifles and match competition components is there too. I have 2 competition target rifles from them that were custom made for me. Great guys.

Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories is a major employer there. They make a lot of components for electrical grids.

The Paper mill there used to put a unique smell in the air in that small valley as well.

Duckworth boats are made in Clarkston (world renowned jet boats).

Furthest inland port on the Pacific for the US. Grain is barged down the Snake/Columbia to terminals in the Portland area to be sent further west.

Hour away from some of the best red wine country in the US. Walla Walla used to be known for sweet onions... now all of that land is grapes and there are over 120 wineries in the area.

.... oh... and i designed over 20 projects for the local hospital..... and finished school 30 miles north in Moscow

I don't work in Automotive. I'm a Civil Inspector for a big electrical utility. Was a CAD designer before that. A medic/safety guy on the offshore oil platforms before that. A Peace Officer before that. No automotive background aside from my own tinkering. Thanks, though.

I lived in Missoula, Lolo actually when I was in Montana. Yes, the winter can be very bad. There were years with mild winter and fairly dry. And years where I couldn't do anything but shovel and plow and shovel. And very cold. There were times I used my lockers on my old Rubicon to get through the streets, not joking. It will just dump snow and the plows cannot get around in time and it will be 2ft deep and chopped up.


Housing is less in lewiston than Boise. Lewiston is not booming though.

I moved here from Montana because my then girlfriend needed to go for work and I wanted to be with her. So I went also.

My fiance and I are sorta friends with the Seekins. Mrs Seekins was my ladys realtor when she moved here and we occasionally hang out with them. They are nice people, and yes his rifles and equipment are top notch.

The air can be bad. It can be crystal clear one day and smokey and stinky the next. It does get super hot here. 107 degrees a few days. And it gets cold but not much snow accumulation in town.

Lots of steep hills/grades. The paper mill stinks. It is worse down by the river close to the factory.

There is a pulp mill in town and if the air isn't moving it can get pretty bad. Lewiston is in a canyon. It's about 700' above sea level but 10 miles to the north or south it's over 3,500ft.
