The great resignation—where is the hired help?

Damn I miss In N Out!! And Mexican food made with real Mexicans!
And fresh grilled seafood that doesn't come drenched in half a gallon of some New England cream sauce...not enough to move back there though.
That is why I griddle/grill my own fresh seafood. We are lucky that we are close to the ocean....that is about all this state is good for.
Yeah I kill my fresh Tuna I don't like any pink, but the wife on the other hand...

I realize the intended meaning is different than this buuuuuttt....

What exactly do Mexicans taste like? :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

So I guess all this means that the cheap China crap that killed so many decent paying jobs here in the USA isn’t so cheap any more. Who would have ever expected that?🤔 If not for relatively cheap China crap would we have even more rebellion in the streets?
You have to wonder if those job were still here in the USA, would the products be affordable to workers? I remember 40 years ago, about the time the China crap started creeping in, the price tag for chainsaws and air compressors were about the same price tag as now days despite hourly pay now being many times higher.
I’m in the camp that increased wages will stimulate increased cost for everything. Both will remain hand in hand. That for the most part, folks will remain in their position in life unless they improve their skills and use of them to get a higher salary. Even going so far as to only mandate increases in the lowest wages would only bring an increase in cost of entry level housing and basic necessities.
As far expecting an employer to train you to a high level position and salary, I think many employers do exactly that but not for every random dipstick. You need to show potential.

If you are in management or own a small business, and if you are there to perform, You will have very strong feelings about the amount of employee engagement that you see. My hat is off to the people that know how to create that.

This leads me to thinking that if we as a country are having trouble getting people to even come to work they sure aren’t going to be a ball of fire when they get there.

People are crying “I’m burned out” that have never even been lit.

@AndyG has heard me say this, the Company I work for now pays us an attendance bonus. When I was let go from my old job, and started where I am now, the bonus was $1.00 an hour, this is just to get folks to be at work 5 10 hour days/nights a week. I had been there for a month when the maintenance boss called a meeting to tell us the bonus had gone from $1.00 an hour to $3.00 an hour  , all that has to be done to get a $3.00 an hour raise is to be on time and be at work 5 days a week. Guess what there are still people young and old that for some odd reason just can't seem to get to work on time or everyday. It just dumbfounds me that folks can be that way.

Unreal- I recently had a worker that had six hours more work to do on something to make $750 and he couldn’t do it- worked a 36 hour week.

So you've got people living on the government dime. Unemployment doesn't last forever, and in my state at least (PA) the extra federal unemployment was cut off about a month ago. So those guys should be out looking for work again.

Then there's the vax mandates, which have caused people to be very picky about who they work for, or to quit their existing job.

Then there's upward mobility, which is really good right now because everyone is so desperate for help that you can get jobs with better working conditions and/or higher pay than you would have qualified for in the past. Possibly why the bottom of the barrel jobs are hurting right now. They just opened a Chipotle down the street from my house. It's almost always closed when I drive by, word is half their staff quit after the first few weeks and they simply don't have the people to open the doors. Several other local restaurants have closed for good in the last 6 months, all due to no help and the owner's just giving up after decades in business.

And maybe with all that shutdown time off some people found side gigs that pay pretty good and they're just doing that, working for themselves.

And ?????. I don't know, other stuff I'm sure.

All of that put together though doesn't seem to explain what's happening. There is NOBODY looking for work. Jobs offering double what they're really worth, and they can't get anyone to even apply. Retired people being called up by ex employers begging them to come back even part time. Back in "the good old days" when you went job hunting, and had a pretty good resume, you might get about half of the places you applied to call you, and some of them would rule you out with a short phone interview. Earlier this year when I went job hunting every single app I put out there resulted in an immediate call for interview and on the spot job offer. It feels like about half or more of the workforce just straight up disappeared. You can't tell me they all went from being somewhat productive members of society to welfare queens. And it's not just the low wage places, I hear this from every corner. We have demand, we just can't find help to meet the demand.

I don't know what's going on but I don't think any of the answers being tossed around adequately explain the reality of the job market right now.
