2005 wrangler X 4.0L
will a thermostat make a clicking noise when opening?
ive got a metallic click when the jeeps been sitting overnight = COLD engine
and warms up around the 1st mark on the temp gauge
normal? opening of the thermostat?
Bad thermostat? headed for disaster?
so far im not loosing any fluids and levels are where there supposed to be

I'm not sure if this is one problem or multiple problems. The following input assumes you have proper coolant levels, no leaks, and a proper mixture for your climate.
For your 100* ECT gauge reading, I'd start by checking your ECTs using in IR thermometer. If the temp readings near the ECT sensor read normal but your gauge continues to read way too low, then I'd likely replace the sensor with a
Mopar ECT sensor. I installed this sensor in my 2005 a few months ago when mine randomly began bouncing between 128* and 195*.
I don't now about clicking noises...but if it's the TS, maybe there's an issue with the spring or attachment points of the stamped metal. Either way I'd change it out if it's making noise. The only thermostat replacements I feel ok with recommending are the OEM or Robert Shaw 330-195 by Flowkooler (I've been happy with mine so far).
We know your system isn't stuck closed if your fluids are good and you are truly running too cool. If that's the case, then I wouldn't worry about being headed for disaster.
That said, an open thermostat can prevent the engine from warming up in cold weather and keep it running too cool even after it's warmed up (150* to 180*). It can also cause poor fuel economy, poor cabin heat performance, and increased engine wear. Are you getting good heat to the cabin? If not then that's another reason for why you might want to replace the thermostat (could be stuck open).
