Thinking of running JK wheels on my TJ with adapters

Are your stud bolts to short or you used the wrong nuts? This looks catastrophic. Lucky you didnt go all over the place and flip. Ya. Not fun.
I suspect the special tool lock nut are cheap and they didn't fit well on the new JK wheels. I'm going to buy better wheel nuts.
They worked fine on my old wheels for 5 years. They do seem cheap and too thin.

New JK wheels fell off on the 10 freeway doing 60mph. So far not fun with the jk new rims. I suspect my wheel nuts are meant for the MB TKO rims. Will need 1x new Jk wheel five new wheel studs and all new wheel locking nuts for these rims. Lesson learn.

WOW, that's scary. Glad it wasn't worse.

I'm a noob here, but it sounds to me like the problem is not the JK rims (many on this forum use them with adapters), but something about the match between your lugs and nuts. Looks like others have already pointed you in the right direction.

Also, how tight are you torquing them? I do about 90 ft-lbs, based on a thread I read on this forum between Chris and Jerry.

Well, he still hasn't driven up and kicked Rubi's ass like he said he was going to.
You also to fail to mention why I said I would kick his ass. He also claimed to be a Neo-Nazi and any true American would kick a Neo Nazi ass. This isn't the political thread and I want to stay on point about my JK wheels.
Everyone who has beef with me then DM me and not post on my threads.
Rubi04 has been posting stupid unwelcome comments on my threads and not just this thread and now you are adding to this problem.

Does anyone know if I can install newer jeep wheels (17”) on my 98 wrangler with just 5x4.5 to 5x5 adapters or do I have to install a lift ?

Sure. Whether you need a lift has more to do with the tires than the wheels. For instance, you could run a 30" tire on your original 15" rims, or you could run a 30" tire on your new 17" JK rims. Either way, the tires are the same size, so no need to adjust your suspension in any way.

The general rule of thumb is that a stock TJ can handle up to 30" tires with no problem. At 31" tires, you start to push the limits, and you may get a little rubbing when you turn as tight as possible. But that's no biggy, and is easily fixed, so it's generally accepted that 31" tires are fine too.

So, what kind of tires will you be mounting on those 17" rims?

I wouldn't consider running adapters unless absolutely necessary. Unless you're going to 37" tires on 17" wheels, this is not a good idea. For 35's and smaller, there are plenty of wheel choices that will fit without an adapter.

I’m only considering this swap because someone is giving me some stock wheels with good tires 255/17 my original stock wheels on my 98 tj are shot and they are 31/10.5/15 with a 5x4.5 pattern I believe the wheels I’ll be getting have the 5x5 pattern and thought adapters that are 1.5 thick would be best ?
