Third Brake Light Contact Assembly

I just installed the Exogate and that went without a problem.

Where I ran into trouble was with the third brake light contacts. The PO removed the tailgate contact assembly and wired a separate CHMSL on a swing out tire carrier.

I found a used assembly on eBay and, once installed, looks to be too short. It also prevents me from opening the tailgate (3rd image).

I have a 2005 LJ. Are there differences in the assembly?

I would go to the hardware store and pick up a piece of flat steel and bend up a new tailgate bracket that fits.

Easier to just install spacers around the three mounting screws between the bracket and tailgate. .

Considered that, but thought it might be a catch all sticking out.

The exogate hinges move the tailgate out a bit as you can see. You will need to shim the contact assembly so it clears the lip when opening and make contact again when closed.

FYI - I only had to shim mine about 1/4 inch but I only installed the hinges.

It turns out there are two versions of the contact assembly. I found the other one from a different eBay vendor. Needed a little bending, but works great.

Also had to extend the snubbers substantially with extra spacers from MorRyde and some large fender washers.

So much better than the swing out carrier. New rear bumper from dirtworx is on the way too.
