Tight hinges

Picked up '04 tailgate hinges, they look like new, and match my paint, but very stiff. I know they were in sealed, indoor storage for many years.

What's the recommended lube? to loosen these up?

You might want to drill into the barrel - you will feel when you hit the pin, and then use a good penetrant - it only takes a 3/32 hole to accept most aerosol straws


Kroil has an excellent reputation- but most anything will be a beneficial.

My '97 had stiff, squeaky hinges when I bought it. Could hardly swing the tailgate fully open. Used WD 40, kept opening and closing, then white lithium grease. Eventually it worked after rust was forced out.

They might not be so tight when you add the leverage of your 3ft long tailgate.

Kroil, Liquid Wrench, or Break Free. WD40 isn't a good choice of penetrant.

drill a small hole in each of the hinges, use Kroil. If you have a Jeep, you need a can of Kroil. Spray liberally. Here's a video:
