Time for a replacement AX-15

Agreed-I went through it all and paint marked all the bolts I touched. New question: what should I do with the core of the old trans?

Rebuilding those is ridiculously easy. Personally I'd buy a rebuild kit for a couple hundred bucks, take it apart, put it back together again and sell it for $1000 to $1200.

My first post becomes more relevant.

Neither here nor there at this point but "lost all gears but fourth" sounds like a stripped input shaft gear. Was it low on oil, by chance?

Before you buy any parts, take a look inside or at least consider that there's a decent chance your input shaft, countershaft, or more likely both may be toast and make sure the value proposition for a rebuild still exists if you have to replace those (not included in a rebuild kit).

The input shaft drives the countershaft to power all gears except fourth, which directly connects the input shaft to the main/output shaft. If you've lost all gears but fourth, this is the most likely failure mode, and replacing the wear parts that come in a rebuild kit isn't gonna fix it.

There was fluid all over the undercarriage, and I would bet that one of the seals let go and that was the end. Thanks for the suggestion-I will take a look and see.

I bought that Bronco II that way. Hardly any oil in it, the clutch disc was nothing but the metal, with all the friction material shredded in the bottom of the bell housing. I believe they ran it low until the input gear starved and melted, then drove it around in 4th until they literally exploded the clutch disc. I bought it for $800, fixed it and daily drove it for 2 years before buying my first LJ.
