Ok, so I’m almost done with a engine swap. The installer turned out to be less than the best. I noticed what appeared to be a chatter noise and my thoughts are a bad remaned engine. However, I took a photo of my old engine and noticed something by the chain. Soooo if this is on my old engine that would make me think it’s not on my new engine. I have attached a photo and my question is would that be the tensioner or the guide that is on the photo next to the chain? And would that mean that my current engine does not have one right now? This photo was taken after the new engine was installed.

Well I have to pull the cover to verify. I called the manufacture about the noise and he mentioned that they do not place the tensioner. But I think he may be talking about the rail on the timing cover. I just don’t know how they would sims test the engine before shipping without a tensioner installed. To me they would have had to have a tensioner installed to even test it right?
I recall the tensioner is on the timing chain cover. Least it is on my 4.0 and that looks pretty similar.
If they shipped the engine without any valve covers...then maybe they didn't include a timing cover?
Maybe your installer didn't put the tensioner on?

Yea the 4.0 only has the guide on the cover. The 2.5l has that guide and a spring loaded tension that appears to attach to the block. I think that’s the confusion with the manufacture. The photo appears to show the part [tensioner] that is attached to the block. I might call the manufacture to ask if the only attached to the block was included. I know the one that slides on the cover was not because they don’t supply the timing cover so they would not stock the guide.
