Trans problems?

I have a automatic 06 tj with 143000 miles. In the last couple months it has developed a few problems. It has the codes po740, po700, po508. When it first threw the codes i took it to a trans shop. The guy there said that the torque converter wasnt locking up all the way at hwy speeds. $2500 for new torque converter and trans rebuild(he recommended a rebuild just because of the mileage on the jeep). I was planning on replacing the TC myself and not worrying about the trans. But just in the last couple days it has had these problems-
Sometimes not shifting into 1st(staying in 2nd gear) when i slow down for a turn.
When I shift to drive it will sometimes start out in 2nd.
After these problems I started wondering if the TC was the problem as I've heard a something about checking the clutch solenoid valve?

Has anybody had these problems/codes? I figured I'd post these questions on here because of all your wisdom! thanks

05/06 42RLE transmissions are known to have a couple programming bugs in the TCM located inside the PCM that cause shifting problems. I don't know if your particular problems are related but @Wranglerfix is a PCM programmer who came up with the fixes for those issues and sells the fixed PCMs. Hopefully he'll chime in here and confirm whether or not your issues are part of the 05/06 issues they were able to fix.

To help verify whether it's the PCM; disconnect battery and short cables to drain PCM memory. Problems should go away (for awhile) if PCM related.

I was having some weird TC issues over the summer. Sometimes it would slip, run hot, and throw codes. Lately though, all good.

So even with pcm issues it will throw a code showing a problem with the torque converter? But I will reset the pcm today and see what happens. Thanks

If your problem is in fact a mechanical failure $2500 sounds really high to me. I had my 32RH rebuilt last winter for $1400 at a local shop here in Indiana.

Good morning and sorry for the delayed response. All three codes come back to the pcm. The OEM pcm will throw false codes.

The 0700 code is a death sentence for the Tranny side of the pcm...Our pcm solves that. starting out in limp mode is a PCM failure as well which will also be resolved.



I would not rebuild the transmission until changing the PCM… I’ve heard too many stories of the 42RLE’s being rebuilt unnecessarily and the problem never goes away.
