Another 42RLE Issue

2004 w/ 5:13’s on 35s. Complete trans rebuild ($5K) couple months ago. Problems now from 1st to 2nd (slipping type shift) and bigger issue down shifting when coming to an almost stop from 2nd to 1st (significant clunk at down shift half the time). Yea gonna take it back to the shop, but does this sound like a TCM issue to you experts? Thanks in advance. @Wranglerfix
 
Are you getting any codes? Usually those tcm’s do not have issues like that.

No codes since rebuild. Prior to rebuild generic trans code. Ended up being torque converter was in pieces so rebuilt entire transmission including new shift kit and all solenoids. Thank you for the reply.

Yeah... that sounds like it might be an issue with the internals. If it were a 32Rh I'd say kickdown band at least needs adjustment and your clutches might be slipping, but after just installing new clutches, that seems odd. Do you know if they installed new plates/steels too? If it's probably not the TCM, as per @Wranglerfix, then it's the transmission itself. @hear?

Sorry I don’t know. Didn’t get a comprehensive parts list of what they replaced other the what I posted. The shop is a trusted shop in OKC that’s been in business for years. Of course take that for what it’s worth.

No bands on the 42RLE! Troubleshooting this unit is hard, because you never really know if it’s a computer/electronic thing or a friction/hydraulic thing. Random gut guess: sticky valve and improper clearance set somewhere.

The FSM probably has a troubleshooting guide that might direct you better.

There's a reason I summoned @hear in here; he knows his stuff. Considering I have yet to successfully rebuild an auto, my advice is perhaps best taken with a rather large pile of salt.

Well I’ve barely touched the 42RLE, so my troubleshooting is even more worthless than usual.

I mean a shift needs several things to not slip:

  • Computer to initiate a shift
  • Wires to carry the signal
  • Solenoid to fire
  • Fluid circuit & valves to move freely
  • Sealing rings to hold pressure
  • Piston seal to hold pressure
  • Small enough clearance that the piston stroke will apply the frictions
  • Enough friction material to hold fast
  • Enough pressure to hold the frictions together
And then depending on the shift you might also need to:

  • Solenoid to un-apply
  • Valves to move freely
  • Pistons un-apply
  • Pressure bleed off from the
  • Enough clearance to allow frictions to spin

Easy right? Just figure out which thing isn’t happening correctly, and correct it. 🤪

I appreciate your reply. I’ll send the TCM to Mark @Wranglerfix when I get back to OKC next Monday to rule it out and take the jeep back to where I had the work done.
