Transfer case drain plug washer

Simple probably dumb question, on my 1997 Jeep Wrangler sport’s transfer case drain plug there is a washer that looks split and is leaking a bit… Is it necessary or can it just be removed? If needed, anyone know where the best place to get one is? Thanks

Tried searching and it seems some peoples has never had one?

Excuse me, my memory didn’t serve me well, It’s the fill plug washer that looks split. I hope that what’s leaking because I’m tired of chasing leaks on the dang thing (resealed the SYE, new yoke seal etc.)

Ok, I don’t think that’s the standard fill plug. I’ve only ever seen one that takes an allen head. But the principle should be the same. Mine doesn’t leak, but if it did the first thing I would try is Teflon tape on the threads. My diff plugs weep if I don’t use Teflon tape. HTH

No clue. Measure the old one.

That’s a YJ transfer case. YJs had hex, TJs Allen.

Either that or the plugs were swapped to older YJ ones. Shouldn’t need washers on those.

No idea on that… my jeep is definitely a tj but who knows what the prior owner did. Hmm… I might try it without. IDK

Silicone, insert, tighten, forget about it. It will also hold it in place at a lower torque sparing the case some wear and tear.
