After replacing all my control arms, Steering, both front and rear axles and gears, steering gear box and numerous other improvements, maintenance and upgrades to my TJ, I thought I was no longer a Newbie!! But every day under the jeep humbles me more.
I just installed a SYE in the transfer case. Went well just like videos and instructions on this forum said it would. When done, it all appeared correct and went back together feeling great and not forcing anything. I had the transfer case in 4Low from the beginning and left it there until complete, (as Forum and a couple videos stated). In my excitement to get it all buttoned up, I hooked my front drive shaft back up as I had marked the yoke and it fit perfectly. (BTW this is all done in my garage with the rear wheels sitting on 8 inch ramps with transmission blocked up and skid plate off). Next I went to the new rear drive shaft and connected it to the new TC Yoke. Of course I did not have the new rear yoke quite in line with the u-joint on the pinion, so I needed to turn the yoke on the pinion, (impossible without lifting a rear tire although I didn't need it turned much), or turn the new yoke on the TC and therefore turn the new driveshaft. So I thought, easy, just put the TC in Neutral, which I did. Seemed to shift fine. Yoke still wouldn't turn, (it moves with a little play, but it is not free for sure). I immediately believed I had something screwed up in what I did in the TC. In trying to think about it, I decided I really didn't know how the TC works inside. Anyway, barely lifting one tire, I got the yoke on the pinion to turn a little and line up with the new SYE Driveshaft. It wasn't off much. But I'm still believing I have something messed up and it is not right. Of course the skid plate is still off and the transmission still blocked up on jacks and stands. So got in the jeep and put it back in 4 Low, started it and shifted into Reverse. Of course it shifted and wanted to go backwards, (I was standing on the brakes so it couldn't move). So then I shifted back to park. I then shifted the TC into neutral and shifted the tranny, (I'm an automatic), into reverse. Nothing, except I could hear the TC or tranny turning, but no tension on the drive train. (like it should be). I shut it off to make sure all internal spinning stopped, and shifted back into park. Then shifted the TC into 4 low again. Started it back up and shifted into reverse, the jeep immediately tried to go backwards. Shifted into park and put the TC into 4 Hi, then shifted from park to reverse, The jeep immediately tried to go backwards.
So after all this, my question. Is the TC working right? Is it correct that you can not turn the rear yoke on the TC if the rear driveshaft is removed and the TC is in Neutral, but the front shaft is in?? Doesn't seem right to me. But maybe it is. I'm hesitant to put the skid plate back on and unblock it just to go drive it to see if it acts right, (especially if I am going to have to tear it down again), without at least getting on the forum and asking!!!! As usual, any and all help appreciated.
