Transmission stuck in neutral

Last night at a stoplight my gear selector was stuck in 4th gear. I could not get it out of 4th gear so I popped the clutch in 4th gear to get a to a safe parking lot. I finally got it to shift again only to make it about a hundred feet. It got stuck again in 4th gear just trying to move through the gears in the parking lot. And now it will not go into any gear whatsoever the gear shiftier or gear selector only moves a little bit left and right and up and down.I cannot find any gears with the motor on or the motor off rolling or not rolling it. It is just stuck in neutral right now. I told it about a mile back to my house with a tow strap I did hear a little bit of winding down there when we were towing it but I still cannot move the gear shifter anywhere. I'm trying to consider what my options are at this point I do have 35 inch tires on the Jeep and there is a lift kit. I don't know what kind of transmission I have but I am sure I'll do some research shortly . I'm trying to get to the bottom of the problem see if it's something I can just fix or if I'm going to be needing a new transmission. If I end up needing a new transmission what is recommended for the mods that I have on the Jeep currently.

. 1997 4.0 129,000 miles . I did confirm i have the ax-15 transmission and found one on this site that was bran new from the factory only 1850ish shipped. i drained the transmission fluid and have good amounts of brass in fluid on the cardboard you can see . here is the link to the new factory transmission what do you all think. the 1850 covers a new clutch and thro out baring... thoughts ?

Tell us what engine you have, your model year, and whether your transmission is a 5 or 6-speed and we can tell you what transmission you're running.

Edit: Nevermind, I found your profile indicating you have a '97 which comes with an AX-15 transmission. As below, it likely needs a rebuild.

Assuming that you have a 97 4.0 sport. In your profile. You are going to have a AX-15 transmission.

From what you are describing it sounds like bent shifting forks.
Might need a rebuild.

I have to agree, it sure sounds like it might be rebuild time.

Wouldn't hurt to take it by a reputable transmission shop. They'll inspect it for free and tell you what they think it is.
