Transmission Whine

I have a 2003 5 speed manual transmission that has a insane loud whine in first second and third gear, it directly relates to the rpm and when im in 4th and 5th on the highway there's almost no whining noise. I've noticed a new leak and it is leaking transmission fluid but the whine came two weeks before the leak. before the leak I had changed my fluid but it didn't help at all. my question is why is it whining and how screwed am I? ill give an update once the leak is fixed hopefully that will help but I have a feeling its not my only issue.
also I should mention its a 2.4L four cylinder.

Sorry, but it's going to be a series of questions to start with...
What transmission lube did you use? EDIT: Did the old lube have metal bits in it? Did it look like it was full?
Can you tell where the lube is leaking from? Can you get pics?
Does it whine if you push in the clutch while the vehicle is moving at speed? What about if you put it in neutral?

Let us know and we can go from there.

I have an 06 Tj. Today when I started the engine there was a loud whining noise, similar to dragging a metal legged chair Across a hard floor. Only happened until 25ish MPH then went away after the engine came to temp. Any ideas?

Hi, @Jafriskey and welcome to the forum!
It's generally considered preferable to start a new thread rather than posting in a new question on someone else's. That said, there are lots of places such a noise could be coming from but, if it began when you started the engine and before you placed the Jeep in gear, I'm betting on a bearing in an idler (there are two) or the alternator, power steering pump, A/C compressor, or water pump. EDIT: I should have said "serpentine belt idler" to be more specific. There is a simple idler that is bolted to the block (#2 in diagram) and does not move (other than rotating) and a tensioner idler (# 7) that is spring loaded and does move, in order to keep the belt tight...a bearing going out in either can cause a horrid racket, as can a failing bearing in the other parts I mentioned.
1) Has it done it more than once or is this a new thing that you have not, as yet, had repeat?
2) Did you feel any changes in vehicle behavior (power loss, steering issues, etc.)?

If it does it again (if it's a bearing, it will), open the hood and try to isolate at least the general area it's coming from. This will give us a lot better idea of possible sources.

Make sure you are using the correct oil for your transmission. Also, be sure to check/change the oil in the transfer case. The transfer case can be a significant contributor to noise in the cabin.

okay sorry for such a delayed update turns out there was a small leak which drained the transmission slowly over time and certain gears inside the transmission need to be replaced however the hard part now is finding those parts. Chrysler no longer makes the parts for the pjs NV1500 transmission and I can't even seem to find a transmission available for a swap. If anyone knows of any 5 speed jeep tj transmission either for sale or for parts please let me know. Again its a NV1500 transmission 5 speed.
