TSB 19-005-03: Power steering fluid usage

Came across a TSB from 2003 applying to TJs about the use of power steering fluid (MS5931) vs ATF+4 (MS9602). Here’s the main part of the summary I’m wondering about:

“MS9602 should not be mixed or used as a "topping off" fluid on systems requiring MS5931. On some past models, MS9602 should be used as the replacement fluid. On these models, if a power steering system is being serviced that results in a large fluid loss, such as a pump, hose or gear/rack replacement, the complete system should be drained and filled with MS9602.”

Is this saying that you could use ATF+4/MS9602 fluids in the power steering on the 97-02 pre-ATF TJs as long as you’d fully flush the old regular PSF and not mix?
If anyone happens to have some clarification on this that’d be awesome.

Power steering fluid and ATF+4 are compatible and you can add one to the other if needed. The factory just says 2003 and newer power steering systems operate better with ATF+4 than with PS fluid or a mix.

So I could actually flush the PSF and put ATF+4 in my 02?
I’ve read on a couple other forums that apparently there’s additives and whatnot in ATF+4 that can damage the seals on the older systems.

I didn't say that, I thought you had a 2003 or newer based on the wording of your question. I should have checked your Profile first. For your 2002 I'd continue to run power steering fluid.

Shoot sorry, ya forgot to mention I had an 02.
But this TSB almost makes it sound like you can replace the PSF with ATF+4, just don’t mix the two.
I wanna flush my power steering and already have a jug of ATF+4 sitting around which is why I’m curious.

I agree the bulletin sounds like it’s ok to switch to atf+4 if you flush the old stuff out. But it would probably be safer to stay with ps fluid and not start a science experiment

I also think maybe Chrysler was trying to keep the parts department from having to stock the older stuff, to possibly free up space for the ever changing antifreeze colors
