Variable speed intermittent wiper behaviour

I realised yesterday that my variable speed intermittent wipe isn’t very subtle. The first three positions appear to be much the same; then the next one is a major change. Then nothing much happens again.

is this due to failure of a variable resistor, or is this 'normal for TJ'?
