VIN decoding question

I recently took a look at the Service Manual for my 2002. I thought the VIN decoding section interesting, but have a question which I wonder if others can help with. The Manual gives four options for the sixth position, either 2 (SE), 3 (X), 4 (Sport) or 5 (Sahara). I checked my sixth VIN digit thinking it would give some insight as to what my UK Grizzly edition was based off - I suspect a pretty basic version. But my sixth digit is an N. I wondered if this was the case for all versions that are not one of the standard model options or maybe it is an export thing.

Does anyone else have an N for the sixth digit in their VIN? Or indeed anything else other than 2, 3, 4 or 5?

Since your TJ is an Export vehicle which had different options than the USA versions... I suspect you will need a VIN decoder for Export models OR contact one of the TJ owners in the UK to see what they have.

Doesn't help mind, it just has a blank where model should be. I was hoping I woul dbe able to understand what the underlying model was, but looks like that is'nt going to happen.

My Jeep was also an export and I purchased it in the UK. However, it was imported to the UK from Japan. It is a 2002 Sahara and when I checked the VIN, the 6th digit was "5". Maybe the "N" is a UK specific thing?

6th digit of mine is N.

6th position on mine is 4=Sport and 5th position is a 4 = RHD so a sport! no help but there ends the argument! 65th is just a fully optioned up Sport with Sahara flairs lol. 6th position 6= Rubicon which was added to the 2-3-4 & 5

Perhaps its just a UK thing? Because mine is a RHD export to OZ and I have a number not letter same as @Joe Blogs TJ from Japan.
Your 10th digit should be 2= 2002. I would like to find the 10th position # on one of the 2007 TJ,s getting around in OZ and Japan to see if its a 6 or a 7.

I really like the idea of the Grizzly though it makes it unique especially with those seats but given @Succentor has a 2001 60th anniversary with a N instead of a 4 it must mean the model type N does not denote a more basic model than Sport. is your 3rd position 4 which is body type MPV (Multi Purpose Vehicle) Because I do know UK has some different licensing requirements on what type of vehicle is what.

Another thought is if it was classed as a #4 on the vin 6 cylinder "sports model" It may have wrongly raised it to a higher level insurance category?

Yes - starts 1J4F4N. 10th digit is 1 (presumably for 2001).

I think it is position 3 which is the Body Type, mine is a "4", so yes classified as MPV. I believe fourth position is weight, "E" = 3001 - 4000lbs and "F" = 4001 - 5000lbs. Mine is an F, which I guess is down to the 4 litre engine.

Maybe what I need to try and do is to see what the spec was for various 2002 models and try and match up. I am pretty convinced that it was just a version with odd bits they had lying around and / or left over from other editions. I believe the seats are the same as those in the UK 60th Anniversary (not sure if all 60th anniversary were the same). I had always assumed it ws based off a pretty basic model as I can't think of much that could be deleted and it still actually function

I just had a look at the standard specification sticky in resources. I think all UK models must be based off a Sport (and maybe all export models), that is because they have a 4.0l engine and a Dana44 rear. However, what is interesting is the sticky lists the gear ratio for a Dana44 axle as being standard at 3.73, indeed 3.07 is not even given as being possible. But my rear Dana44 in a UK version has 3.07 gears according to the VIN decoder. Did they get 3.07 gears in a Dana44 for just UK (or all export) models?

But then I also have a 16" wheel that is not listed in the specification sticky anywhere, I believe it may be from a Cherokee. In the VIN decoder it is described as "WDF: Wheels - 16 X 7.0 Alum,"Icon" Silver"

I think all UK TJs had that wheel - mine does and I’ve not seen other factory wheels here.
