I just talked to my old physics professor about this.

Are you looking for someone to talk you in to it; or out of it?

Your 250 lb bike, plus the hitch, might possibly create 400 lbs (or more) of force when hitting a dip.
A good Class 3 hitch is normally rated for 500 lbs. of tongue weight.
The issue is whether the end of your Jeep frame can handle it.

The recommended tongue weight is almost always 10% of the towing capacity of the hitch.
However, even though that hitch can tow 4000, a TJ is only supposed to tow 2000.
IIRC, 3500 for an LJ.

Correct but we are talking about basically a hitch basket so we are less worried about max tow capacity and what its max tongue capacity is.

Yep,what hitch is it? How is it attached and with what bolts? Strapping the bike back to the jeep would at least help it not bounce and rattle

I understand that.
My point was, just because I use in a 10K lb. Class IV hitch doesn't mean I can hang 1000 lbs on the back of the Jeep.
