So I started having this problem on Friday and I am very confused. Every morning, I let my Jeep warm up about 15 minutes and on Friday, once I started to drive and accelerate, I had this horrible ticking sound. It did it really loud at first and as I drove, it got quieter and quieter until it went away after about 3 or 4 minutes. I thought maybe a lifter tick but if it was, it would do it even at idle right? I also read a lot of people had a crack in their exhaust manifold but if that was the case, it would do it all the time. So I am stumped. Any help would be great.

My manifold stud is broken off and it ticks real loud but only when cold, so a cracked manifold or similar can definitely be intermittent.

Some type of exhaust would be my guess. Could be a small gasket that leaks until the metal expands and temporarily seals it. I had similar on a 4 cyl CJ-7. A bit of brazing lasted a month or two until the thermocycling would re-crack it.
