Question for the welders out there. Seems like if I clean up an area for welding using a wire wheel. I have trouble holding a bead spit and sputter. Am I correct in assuming the brush (power driven, not hand) is leaving a film of metal and the shiny look is not just clean base metal?

Go back and hit it with a hand brush before welding. It well help clean the area for a better weld.

Wire brushes can get contaminated. Steel can absorb oil and water. Working on old steel is a pain. Try changing wire wheels out for the different tasks you're doing, and hitting the weld zone with a tourch, low heat, before welding on it. Might improve matters some.

The wire is brand new right out of the package but using it leaves it so shiny that I suspect it is depositing a metal on the surface that does weld so well. Hadd not thought of using a torch so Ill try that. Thanks

Don't heat it cherry red, just drive the moisture out...
