Second most important thing is to get an expensive auto darkening hood with big viewing area. Then get lots of spare cover plates for the outside, a few for the inside. If you can't see, you can't weld.

Learn how to watch the puddle from the side. In the above picture, your head would be to the left looking at it about the same way you are looking at it in front of a computer screen. The reason for that is to keep your hood and face out of the welding smoke which is not good to breathe and more importantly, fogs up the welding lens. If you can't see, you can't weld.
