What are these holes drilled into the back of the tub for?

I have these holes drilled into the back of the tub where the glass of the hard top closes on top of, there are also 2 matching holes on the passenger side. I always thought some PO just put them there. But I saw @AWTJ2000 post a photo and he has them too. Is this something missing from the factory? What are they for?

If you have a soft top, there's a piece of sheet metal trim that goes there, and the soft top connects to it.

Original brackets were designed that the original hardtop window could close without removing those brackets.
Some say they even helped hold the window shut.
Newer replacement (Bestop) brackets have to be removed to shut a hardtop rear window.
