Keep seeing reference to the “POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER” inside the 2004 FSM. What is it? Can it only be performed with the $2000-3000 Chrysler DRBIII tool?
The Powertrain Verification Tests are in the Powertrain Diagnostics Procedures Manual. I have that manual for my 2005, and there are six tests (Versions 1 to 6). Each test is different, and some do use the DRBIII. There are other Verification Tests, too. Here are the six Powertrain Verification Tests for the 2005 TJ:

I bought a DRBIII for that reason. @Steel City 06 recently posted about a scanner that can do the relearn procedure for the cam sensor, so that may be a cheaper alternative...
