What makes a good shock for an outboard?

Since most people do modifications over time and you had to do either the front or the back first, which one would you typically see the most benefit from?

From reading here, it looks like more people outboard the rear than add 11" RR shocks to the front. Is that because the rear is easier or because that's where the most gain is?

Rear is significantly easier. And the rear gets the largest improvement in travel correcting after a 4" spring lift. And the rear has lower shock mounts that get raised up to axle tube height.

The reason for front 11s is because getting anything longer is far more trouble than it is worth on stock axles. 12s are 3" longer extended than 11s are and difficult to package. And Currie/RockJock front springs run out of travel at about an 11" shock split 50/50.

I am parts gathering to 35's I have the 4 inch currie, sitting here savvy TT but I am not settled on suspension, I plan to outborad the backs. It will be more of a trail jeep I would sooner buy once and cry once, I am more forest trails and rutted mud sections.
