Who Has Bought a Rebuilt NSG370?

Here is an option I found but have ZERO EXPERIENCE OR FEEDBACK WITH

Not to dredge up and old chestnut - but what about converting it to the so-called "wide ratio" version? Lower 1st and 2nd gears...

FWIW, mine still sounds like a box of rocks when idling with the clutch released, just as it did before the repairs. NSG370 is just a noisy box.
i put in a high impact nsg370 8 months ago when i could no longer hear the guy at the drive trough speaker unless i pushed the clutch pedal down :)

not many miles on it yet but it is a night and day improvement. i had no issues shifting, just lots of noise.

If both of you are referring to the clutch in/out rattle, the solution is simple

Well damn, that video was helpful. Mine does the rattle, but not nearly as bad as the JK in the video.
Also curious about the reman units, my reverse requires pressure on the shifter to not slip out. Maybe the BL, maybe internal.

Yeah, I'm not pursuing a local rebuild or trying to tackle it myself.

I just want to buy a transmission and swap it. It's the quickest way to get my Jeep back in service.

Who bought one and what was your experience? That's all I want to know. Anybody?
Hello Gang

I need a new/rebuilt transmission. Please don't bother with the AX15 suggestions. I've read plenty of that and I get the reasons for it. I'm not looking for alternate transmission suggestions right now. And please no suggestions on tips and tricks for the NSG370 if you don't mind.

I have an '05 LJR with the NSG370 6 spd I've had for several years and I can no longer reliably get it into reverse. It's always been finicky but it's way worse now and I don't consider it safe to take offroad alone at the moment so it's parked until I get this resolved. Bad timing! Couldn't happen in the winter?

On a recent trip to Silverton CO, there were a couple times when I was not sure I could get reverse to engage at all. It's time to replace it. It has roughly 115K miles on it.

So the quickest/easiest solution is to replace the NSG370 with a fresh rebuilt one. However, I cannot find much info on the quality of the rebuilt units. The 2 vendors I've found the most on are Zumbrota and High Impact. Zumbrota is more expensive but that could be due to the external appearance they brag about so much. If a rebuilt lasts 16 years and 115K miles like the original, that's good enough for me.

So has anyone bought a rebuilt NSG370 from any vendor? If so, please describe your experience dealing with the vendor and your experience with the product. I would like to get the transmission swapped asap but don't want to purchase a new headache.

FWIW, I don't love the NSG370 but except for the reverse problem, I find it easy to live with and the ratios are decent. The thought of going to a wider ratio 5 spd (AX15) doesn't appeal to me but is currently plan B if I can't convince myself that another NSG370 will be OK.

Thanks in advance!

•I just happen to find a used one for 1500.- for our ‘05 LJ
• I got it of a fellow jeeper, whom I trust
• I’ve put less than 5000 km on it so far and it shifts like it’s supposed to
• apparently it came out of a rolled Jeep with 100’000 km ( 60’000 miles)
• as was mentioned before, parts are expensive and not easy to get
• 4500.- cdn $, for a rebuilt one , one day away , that’s what I was quoted from NAPA , here in Dawson Creek,BC,Canada
• I’ll sell you mine
• ( pickup or delivery will be the killer ☺️ )
• after 200’000 + km,

my original NSG370, gave me grief with 1st and 2nd gear, to the point where syncro-parts washed out while draining tranny oil 😱😂
• less than 2 hours for the swap pin the driveway with a teenager helping ☺️
• I’m hoping to get finally serious with my project “spark plug delete” ,and I have a built 4L60E ready here in our garage

Thanks. That is exactly the kind of feedback I'm looking for. So far, high impact looks like a viable option.

I don't think I want or need a lower 1st or 2nd. As it is, I often start off in 2nd if I'm moving at all or or on a slight downhill. The ratio spread is the main reason I want to keep the 6 spd.

This isn't allot to ask for. Have you checked under the boot to be sure you don't have spare change jamming the shifter? Seriously, I have seen this on an 06, those are low miles to have issues.

Besides getting into gear is everything else normal?
Consider too that BL is known to cause shifting trouble

Nope, have a friend that bought a new one in 2006 about the same time I bought mine. Had the same issue and it was loose change. His had almost no miles when he bought it, maybe 25, mine had 28k but I've had it for awhile too. Sounds like you've researched on the internet what your problem is, I don't want to get in the way of that.

If loose change was causing your friend's problem, it was no way "the same problem" as mine. Lucky for him though.

Thanks for the suggestion but in my case, this has been a gradual degradation over several years and for anyone familiar with the NSG370, not surprising or unexpected.

True for the TC if using the stock linkage. However, a BL should have 0 effect on transmission shifting unless maybe you're talking extreme BLs.

I have.

I went with high impact. Check my build thread. Overall I’m happy.

One thing to note.. you can’t drive a NSG370 like a sports car. It’s a truck transmission. It takes time to shift into gear. If you know how to drive it correctly, it should last a long time.

• Not trying to argue, but from my personal xperience, 2” BL and a stiff shifter boot especially in wintertime , causes shift stick travel limit/restriction
• I been driving with the stick boot removed for the last few weeks, what a difference !

lemme know if that works for ya

Interesting video. Mine is much less noise than that JK. I'd also call that noise more of a rattle. Mine sounds much closer to rocks in a polisher. :ROFLMAO:

It was really bad when the input bearing went. Otherwise it drove fine before and fine after, with the rocks tumbling.

My 2 cents, I recently purchased a transfer case from Zumbrota via rock auto. After 200 miles, It leaks terribly. Had my mechanic install, used him for years and trust him completely. To have it replaced, I have to repurchase and then send back the original for refund. Read some of the reviews, after the fact, they're notorious for their re-man's to leak.

Here's an update.

I bought a High Impact rebuilt NSG 370. It's about half installed and that's where it will be sitting for a while. I wanted to make sure it worked well before sending back the core but life intervened.

I managed to fall while hiking and now have a full tear in my left rotator cuff requiring surgery and a 6-month recovery.

The transmission situation caused postponement of my plan to convert to manual locking hubs using the Reid Racing knuckles. I was almost ready to start the actual conversion work when reverse went out. Now everything is on hold while I try to regain the use of my shoulder.

Not happy.

Sounds like you're unfamiliar with this particular transmission. They had a known design flaw that affected reverse. A TSB was issued and updated parts were manufactured to resolve the problem. There is plenty of info on the issue/TSB available on line if you are interested in the details. I don't know how successful the updates were.

My Jeep also had about 90K miles on it when I got it. I have no idea how skilled the previous multiple owners were at driving a stick.

I know my Jeep. Reverse has been problematic at times but I could always get reverse to engage with a little extra effort/technique. That is no longer the case. I am 100% confident that it is no longer possible to reliably engage reverse in my personal NSG370. I am not in the least surprised by this. I expected to get here eventually. Some don't but many do.
2005 had those issues. My 2006 has zero shifting issues. Type of fluid plays a big part in this as well.
It is a noisy trans by nature. Throwout bearing is noisy as well, even after replacement...but you couldn't pay me to use an auto.

It does just fine behind my LS for 2 years. As for rebuilding. It isn't rocket science, and parts ARE still available. There are plenty of companies out there selling refurbs

Just do your research and find a shop that is familiar with the trans. If they have never heard of it, run. They are in 05/06 TJs and 07-18 JKS

Since we're talking about this - I'll ask the question that nobody seems to have an answer for, but maybe something's changed. If/when I need to rebuild mine, I'd be *VERY* interested in the so-called "Wide Ratio" version - apparently used on Diesel Libertys or some such. It has a deeper 1st and 2nd gear. Are the parts to accomplish this available, or are they unobtainium?

Lots of people have asked this question, nobody seems to know much about it...
