I think this will turn into an interesting thread.

So, can someone explain the " I am owed" culture?

Why are you entitled to anything?

Why should the taxpayers pay for your healthcare? College? Rent? Food? Electric? And on and on.

Dont get me wrong. I believe in giving people a hand up. Not a hand out for life.
I also believe some people are mentally or physically unable to work and need public assistance.

I was initially going to say that this ought to be interesting, but I think what you're going to find is the folks on here (this forum) are going to basically reply with what they believe the "entitled" to believe, and not have any respondents who actually feel that they, themselves, are entitled. But let's see, shall we? ;)

I'm owed New Dynetrac axles with ARB's & 5.38 gears
I'm owed 5 acres of land with a 50'x75' HEATED shop with a lift in one bay and a pit in the other.
I'm owed steak 2 nights per week

Damn but I'm too old to fit into the "I'm Owed Everything" bunch

I'm of the mind that ALL people when they graduate from HS should have to do 2 years in service to our country. And I mean everyone. If you can't physically do things then you can work in a office or other types of clerical work. Plus the training you'll receive will help you later on.

If you only want to do your 2 years you do things like KP or mowing lawns and picking up trash. You get paid at minimum wage.
If you want to get training and a profession you sign up for 4-8 years of service and we train you in a trade. Once your time is done you can go work where ever you want.
Once you've done your 2 years you get collage or a trade school paid for up to 24 months. If you want to go to school for a longer time then you pay for the rest of it.

So even those who are handicapped get training that will enable them to work after their service to their country.

But I know this would never fly...

My Dad used to say something very similar. He was 26 (or was it 28...?) years Navy, so I had a great respect for his viewpoints on such matters. Lost him in 2012. Love ya, Dad...

Btw, a belated statement of genuine appreciation to you, @Wildman, and every veteran out there. You all deserve more than just a day on the calendar that acknowledges your service to this country. That is something that is truly owed to you! 🇺🇸

Why are you entitled to anything?
Why do you feel you are "owed" certain things?
Why are you "owed" taxpayer funded clean drinking water?
Why are you "owed" taxpayer funded primary and secondary education?
Why are you "owed" a taxpayer funded fire department to put out your house fire?
Why are you "owed" taxpayer funded roads and road maintenance?
Why are you "owed" taxpayer funded police protection and criminal investigation?
Why are you "owed" a taxpayer funded court system to air your grievances?
Why are you "owed" taxpayer funded protection and maintenance of offroading destinations like Moab, and Johnson Valley?
Why are you "owed" taxpayer funded support if you become disabled or have a severely disabled child?
Why are you "owed" taxpayer funded programs that will keep your miserable carcass from starving or freezing if you get so old that you can't otherwise care for yourself?
Why are you "owed" a taxpayer funded military to protect your country's economic interests and to protect you from real and imagined terrorist threats?
Why are you "owed" a taxpayer funded tax break just because you bought a home or had a child?

Why are you "owed" countless other taxpayer funded things that you enjoy, depend on, and take for granted? Who do you think you are to desire or gawd forbid even demand any of that stuff?

It's because as a society we have decided those are good things. We have decided that taking money from individuals and distributing it through our governments is necessary for the function and prosperity of our society. Any functional society requires that sacrifices be made by individuals for the common good.

The question isn't whether a thing one group wants is "socialist" or not. It's can we afford it. Its whether we should sacrifice or trade something we might have individually or collectively for something that is good for everyone and advances our civilization in a direction we want to go.
