wiper issue

When I bought this TJ a few months ago I noticed that when i shut the wipers off they didnt return to the full down position. They just stayed in what ever spot they was in when i shut them off. A little annoying but not a big deal. 1st vehicle i have ever owned that did that. I'm going to go out on a limb and say thats not as intended. But they worked so I didnt worry about it. But today when I hopped in to make a quick run they didnt work at all. I will check the fuse but im thinking with its previous issue that the motor just quit.

Any thoughts on this?

Do they ever reach the bottom position while on? If not, the arms just need to be to be taken off the studs and replaced in the proper position. Of course, if they just stop anywhere in the cycle, that's not the fix...

Yes they stop in the bottom position if I switch it off when it reaches the bottom....when they worked that is

Sounds like the wiper motor. Easy fix.

One word of caution (at least based on my experience) if you're looking to replace the entire linkage. I went to replace the linkage on my daughter's LJ and bought a Dorman aftermarket. Its fit was horrible and the OEM wiper arms wouldn't fit. I found a Mopar replacement and life was good again.

Along these lines, my wipers over swipe off the windshield. Swiping off the windshield too far both ways. Any thoughts on what's wrong?

Is the motor and linkage all stock or has anything in the system been replaced?

Everything is stock/factory original.

I know it's always best to start with the easiest/simple stuff first, but come on guys, give me a little more credit than that!!! Yes they are 13 inches. They work correctly sometimes and then at other times get sloppy. Very intermittent. Does it on any speed setting. My thoughts are the motor itself. But if any of you know for sure or have had similar issue, I'd appreciate your corrective advice.

Not doubting you at all. I tried longer blades I had, and they were too long. I think they were 14".
If your blades are correct, my next guess would be worn linkage.

I have thought of that too. How hard is that to get to and change? I've not had to do that before. I try to do most service / repairs myself. That way I know it's done right! And I'm a little on the thrifty side

Not too hard. Remove wiper arms, there are latches on them, once unlatched the pull right off. Then take the cowl cover off. Six or eight screws. The wiper motor and linkage is under cowl cover.

I'd bet dollars to donuts that the bushings in your wiper linkage is shot.

I'll get in there this weekend and take a look. Are those parts available at parts stores or is it going to be a dealership run?

I never tried to replace just the rubber bushings. I just replaced the hole assembly. Once you take the cowl off you'll know pretty quickly just by pushing back and forth on the main cross member how much play you have and if it's the real cause of your issues.

So today it rained. Wipers did not over rotate at all. Couldn't be worn bushings as that would be a consistent issue. This is an intermittent issue. Any ideas?
