Won't start

I have replaced alternator, and starter. If I jump it off it cranks. But shortly after removing jumper cables it cuts off. I removed the battery cables while running and it cuts off. I took the alternator off and am going to see if I got a bad one. If they tell me the alternator I just put on is good what else could be the problem ? Oh, and I swapped batteries from my daily driver and it does same thing. Most likely they gonna tell me bad alternator or do I have a totally different issue ? [emoji17]

My jeep shows if the alternator is charging inside on the instrument cluster, dose yours not have this ? Otherwise you can check it at the batery terminals with a multi meter, may be also worth checking your fuses if you havnt already

If the bettery gauge is showing it up around 14 then the alternator should be charging ok, sadly though I'm not a auto electrician so cant really help anymore than that

that's the crazy thing. When I first crank it it shows 14 and it's fine. But then it drops down in the red to nothing that's why I was thinking maybe I got a bad alternator

So it seems like there is an issue at your battery. If you jump it it runs? Even if your alternator was bad it should still run. I am not saying that your alternator is good, but you definitely have a battery issue. By jumping it you basically bypassed your battery and it works. Then when you re-introduce your battery it fails. I know you replaced it with your daily driver but you didn't mention what that is. If it is a Honda Civic the battery might not be enough to run the Jeep. Although I would think it might. I would look for loose or bad connections on your battery all of the way to your alternator and fuse box under the hood.

Make sure all of your connections are clean and tight.

It is difficult to help more without multimeter readings. I need more information than your gauge in the car. That is more of a guide than a precise measurement.

Honestly it sounds like you have a simple issue that needs to be tracked down. If you have a multimeter we can check some things and pinpoint it, but if you don't, I suggest just towing it to your favorite mechanic that does, and they can get to the root of the problem rather quickly, and probably save you from replacing some unnecessary parts. If you happen to have triple A, the tow is free.

The battery was out of my Jeep liberty. Local mechanic is ME. No reason to pay unnecessary money to a man when all it takes is my time to figure things out. I'm going to have alternator checked just to be sure. Ive already taken it off. Then for sure next thing will be checking the connections and fuses. It takes longer yes, but I like learning how to problem solve things myself, unless it's a major thing I prefer to DIY. Especially when it comes to my Wrangler.

Please don't take offense. I did not question your gender, nor did I say you should take it to a man, I only suggested based on the lack of proper tools.

I admire your wanting to do it yourself as also I believe you can. It is just mighty hard without the tools is all.
