Body Mount Tire Carrier: Swing Down or Swing Away?

Hey everyone. Been busy getting my LJ torn apart and pieced back together. Just stripped my fenders, sliders, and corner armor to be powder coated. PO painted them and they've taken a beating. In doing so, I've decided to revisit my rear bumper/tire carrier before I send everything off to get powder coated. I'd like to move to a body mounted setup.

I've been looking at the GenRight and PSC swing down style tire carrier's and am intrigued. I'm not planning on changing my spare that often, so I think the novelty of a swing down would more frustrating than anything. Am I overthinking this?

The Rusty's Carrier looks awesome and is significantly cheaper. I'd like to get my HiLift and Shovel out of the cab though, and I don't think that would leave me much to mount them to.

Open to suggestions. For those who went with a drop down tire carrier, have you regretted it?

Others will chime in im sure, but personally I think it would be a pain in the ass to get anything from the trunk wih a swing down and a tire in the way. IMHO i would go with a swing out

I agree lifting that carrier with a heavy tire mounted to it every time I wanted to get in the back would get old very fast

Have you seen moryde exogate? I think I spelled moryde correctly. I do have genright swing down tire carrier. I never opened the tailgate to get something out the back so I decided swing down was okay for me but then I got my Doberman and she’s growing fast and is getting heavier for me to keep picking her up every time to put her in the jeep. Having to put it down and lift it all the time is getting old and I would now prefer swing out tire carrier. Before my dog I never even touched the swing down tire carrier so if you don’t open the tailgate as much swing down is just as good as swing out.

If the Warn is accomplishing the goal of carrying a spare, why change? Moryde is good. Any chance of mounting it in the tub where the rear seat is?

Having owned the Genright Swing down carrier, accessing anything in the rear with a top on is very difficult .
I‘m running 35s and having to clean and jerk the carrier and tire got old fast.
It looked cool with the stinger look , but was a pain in the rear.

I Replaced with a body mounted swing out carrier —- MUCHO BETTER

Rusty's carrier is significantly cheaper for a reason. I wouldn't install anything from Rusty's even if it was free. He earned a bad reputation many years ago for everything from a bad product to bad post-sales support where he basically was telling people to go pound sand.

I didn't make this meme but it reflects the feeling of a lot of people toward Rusty's.

So far as a swing out vs. swing down I'd go for a swing out. It's damned difficult to control/lift/lower that big & heavy of a tire on a swing down, you'd likely be asking for help.

I hate the incessant rattling that seems to always come back. Also, I had someone local offer me 1K for my Warn and feel like I can't pass up that opportunity given it's currently shape. I have somethings I'd like to mount to the carrier as well, like a shovel and jack.

A swing down only has an advantage one time and that is when you need to remove the tire to swap it onto the rig. The rest of the time nothing about one does not suck.

As for Rusty's tire carrier, while I am not a fan of anything they do, seeing that carrier in person shows it solved a whole bunch of issues with that style carrier. I'd never own one but if you want something very heavy duty that mounts to the tail gate, you won't find anything stronger. It has a few design quirks I'd do different and it still has the tail gate latch as a weak link but the rest is hell for stout.

Your jack is silly and there are lots of places to put that shovel that don't involve a tire carrier.

Swing-out over swing-down but I wouldn’t add a bunch of extra weight to it with the tools and that 37 spare. That said the GR hinges on rubber bushings so in order to close it without having to lift it more than a couple of inches you will have to put a bunch of preload in that hinge side and you will still have to give it a little lift to latch it (pin it) because of that you will get tired of adjusting it quickly. I made crescent shaped shims to put in the slots to keep the hinge bolts from shifting, I removed mine for now and went with the MORryde until I install tub armor, the wife loves the MORryde and hated the GR swing-out.
