New Tom Wood driveshaft question

It is apparent you have never done any volume painting.
I wouldn't be asking if I did, so to qualify my question-

Coming from a person who has never done any volume painting...
it would seem to be extra labor time and chance for grease contaminating painting surfaces or loosing needle bearings, etc?

Anytime you're dealing with high-volume, efficiency has to be close to the top of your priority list. Swapping caps is faster than applying/ removing masking tape. Even if you miss the occasional needle bearing.

Taping off a ujoint would suck as they come from the factory with a oil film on them. Swapping caps is a much easier solution. You can just paint over the joint too but for the same reason you end up with splotchy paint and Shawn is trying to provide a more presentable product.

Alright, most of us have been on the internet reading about Jeep shit and problems for a very long time. If there was an incident rate of this happening at Tom Wood's shop higher than this single incident, it would be out there for all to see and it just isn't. Shit happens, I guarantee you that they are discussing it, asking those involved to be more vigilant, and the chances of it happening again are so miniscule that it is a non issue and certainly not enough of one for them to change how they do things other than to check closer for an orphan needle where it doesn't belong.

Swapping caps for painting takes seconds and costs zero after the first set of caps. Masking tape costs money, time is 2-3 minutes per end to apply and remove. Caps make sense then, now, and tomorrow.

100%!

Tom Wood's has earned a lifetime customer out of me. Shawn even spent nearly half an hour on the phone with me last year helping me figure out a vibration that wasn't remotely their problem and educating me on the machinery used to balance driveshafts, then rebalanced a shaft that they originally built but had been lengthened by a local shop, and had it back to me before the end of the week. Customer service is top notch and the fact that it's so rarely needed is icing on the cake.

My intent was never to cast aspersions on Tom Woods in any capacity. I deliberately chose them due to their stellar reputation and overwhelming positive recommendations. I'm just a newb who wanted input and a sanity check. I've received both and all is well.

It certainly doesn't hurt that Shawn pays me to talk nice about him.

You could take the more difficult road and epoxy in the needles so they can't fall out, or even better, machine custom aluminum caps. All to fix a problem, that isn't a problem

Such a gentle and kind response. All from the Village “Crew Member” 👊🏼
