Sometimes working on your own vehicle isn't worth it

Lmao! You said not much wind "comparatively"!
That's like saying, "When measured against a .50 cal, getting shot with a .223 isn't that bad...you know, comparatively. "

Seriously, I mis a LOT of things about Wyoming. The wind and the cold are not among those things.

It's not that bad. Can hardly tell the difference between 10 degrees and -10 degrees in the grand scheme of things. And I'm from California. Shoot, after a few days of this I want to put on shorts and a wife beater when it gets above 20.

Same here my friend. I came back to Maine yesterday afternoon from a 3 week stint in FL. The minute I stepped outside and breathed in that cold air, I could feel the anxiety of the travel leave my body. Some of us are built for the cold weather. Give me -10 over 90 any day! Not even a question for me. If the wife would allow it, I'd be in Alaska year round.

What town do you live in? I grew up near Woods Landing, west of Laramie. I sure don't miss that winter wind, but we're up there in the summer a lot. Saratoga and Lander are favorites of ours. Maybe we'll get back when we retire.
We have good friends in Casper. That is NOT a pleasant winter destination. They usually come see us that time of year.

Born in Cheyenne, lived in Cheyenne, Laramie, Casper and up near Buford.

So many things close to home in this thread.

Worked my way through college at a Goodyear service center. One of the best/worst experiences of my life.
good: improved my wrenching skills and overall mechanic knowledge. That said, I would rate myself slightly better than a parts hanger. As a result, I have no problem paying a skilled, proven mechanic to diagnose and repair items I don’t have experience with.

The bad: can’t tell you the number of people that can’t take care of their shit and blame the mechanic for their faults (lack of maintenance or running into curbs). Dealing with people on topics they don’t understand sucks! Even worse, they think mechanics and service people are less than human despite the need to get their car fixed.
lastly, some ‘techs’ are terrible. Can’t tell you the number of jobs screwed up by incompetent people. Like really bad! Cars dropped off lifts. Forgetting to put oil in after an oil change, crashing vehicles during a test drive…

probably the reason I chose a career in finance.

I try and do all the work I can in my shop, if I had a lift I could do more!!!! It's kind of therapeutic for me to work on my Jeep.

The wife's Nissan Armada platinum reserve will go to a shop for sure!!!!!

Working on my vehicles used to be therapeutic. Well...except for my old TT Roadster.

Now I have kids and a wife that don't like it when I stay in the garage wrenching away too long......or spend money having someone else do it for me. So, I'm fucked. 🤣

Finally finished the front end today. Everything was seized on that Excursion. The costs just nickle and dime up. The adjustment sleeves for the tie rods were rusted shut so I had to buy new ones. There was a thrust washer missing. Three axle end washers were missing. I finally bought the tool to put the vacuum hub seals in properly without destroying anymore. It's all together. Lower ball joint nut on pass side won't tighten all the way down because the ball joint threaded end just spins. I'll have to have someone look at that. Alignment is off now, of course.

Found another problem too. The universal joints on the front driveshaft were squeaking (on the transfer case end so I hope it's not a carrier bearing or output ahaft bearing) so I have to replace those. Fighting Covid now so I don't have the strength to do it myself. Couldn't get the rear tires off no matter how hard I tried so I'll have to get someone else to put the new rotors in the rear on.

Still a good deal on this Excursion but my wife hates me now.

Boy that is a shit sandwich. I hate those Ford vacuum front end setups. Total doodoo. Then add rust, ouch.
Where the hell did that thing come from? Chicago? They’re not usually that rusty out here.

It's not bad rust (Not NE rust) but enough to seize all threaded metal parts. It was first sold in Washington, then lived it's life in Montana for many years, then off to Wyoming for another many years.

I'm starting to hate this thing. I replaced the three front driveshaft ujoints today as well as put in a new yoke kit. Took me five hours.

I set an alignment appointment yesterday. Asked if the shop could throw in my new brake pads and put the rear rotors on real quick since I'm lazy. They quoted me $400 just for the labor on that part alone. I guess they charge for liability. Also tried to tell me the brake pads were going to be a 3-4 hour job. Riiiiight....
