My original rims are in sad shape, with some of the rivets on the outer edge having just fallen off. The first time I found one in the driveway, I didn't know what it was or from where it came. You can also see on the last photo that there is a burn mark from where some flapjack at the tire center over-torqued the lugs and I had to use a torch to get it loose, as well as replace the drum brake wheel cylinder that couldn't take the heat.

A few questions: Are the edge rivets (or whatever those little knobs are called) able to be replaced? Are they welded on or bonded? How hard are they to remove, and what would be good replacements if these are both viable options? It seems that these are ornamental in nature.

I have never restored any rims before, but I assume it is somewhat straightforward. Still, any suggestions, tips, or tricks are gladly received. I am strongly considering having these painted to match the factory spice hardtop. I might need to photoshop it first to see if I like it.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I might do both-get a replacement set and also refurb these and paint them to match the hardtop.

I will do so. I am curious as well. I spent some time looking at the old CJ2, 3 and 5 color combos but didn't see anything that was close to the moss green/spice combo.

The rivets can be punched out from the back side. Punch and hammer will do the trick. I rattle canned my wheels years ago and they still look good. Sand, primer and paint.

I know this is a relatively ancient post, but first off those wheels look awesome. Secondly, I take it the rivets are purely ornamental? I have a set and I like them, but the rivets are starting to pop off which scared me a bit. Mine have unfortunately been sprayed with bed liner by a PO.
I may pop the rivets and strip then as a project for when I can't drive on the beach.

I was wondering if anyone found replacement rivets? I found a decent set of wheels but want to replce the rivets. Winters in the rust belt make them harder and harder to find without rivet failure.

Great thanks for sharing!!

I did have to make the rivot hole larger but minimally. they fit great and look factory. the originals were very much shot and guarantee they will snap off as you work with the originals. Great tip again.
