Just replaced the spare tire carrier to a swing away on the bumper. Since the third brake light wiring comes out of the tail gate how is everyone running the wires? I was thinking maybe brining it through the tail light and out the bottom of the tail light and then run it alouthe carrier.

Anyone do anything like this?

Yeah, I did. I’ll see if I have any pictures I can offer.

I opened up the cheesy plastic cover and spliced in at factory location. Ran new loom to tire carrier. Drilled entry hole into tire carrier and ran loom (through a grommet) into carrier. Poked wire/loom out through center hole in carrier. Wired up a light that fits in that hole.

Edit- OK, not a very good picture but it is all I have on my phone.....

You tapped into the wiring in the tail light?

I believe he spliced into the stock third brake light wiring inside the tailgate in order to extend it to the new light.

For the one in the tire carrier, I went though the tailgate to the existing connection point. I have rubber grommets at both the tailgate and where the loom enters the carrier.

Those are cool. They completely change the look of a TJ. What did you do for the brake light on the roof?

It was an option when ordering the top. For wiring, I just drilled through the rear corner of the tub (sealed by grommet and marine-grade sealant) and tied into the brake lights using sealed butt connectors.

I don't run one as it's not required in California. Check you state's laws.
It may not be required here in California but with all the idiots driving while drinking, smoking weed, texting, high on crack, etc. I figure I need all the help I can get so I'll be fabricating a replacement 3rd brake light soon.

Ha! I may not be in CA but I think everyplace has at least a few of those issues! That’s why I ordered my top with the additional brake light.... just one more, a bit higher than the rest, sure can’t hurt anything to have it on there! :)

I ran the wire true the tailgate.
(I know i should use black sticky backs...)

I do some research for a desing and we do this. Very bright and with OEM wheel is lot more visible.

Others pics on how we place the LED's.

I was just trying to avoid having all the extra wiring needed to come out of the gate to the carrier. I was thinking coming through the tub or the tail light and then right to the carrier arm. Less of a chance of it getting pinched.

Chance to get pinched for sure but a breeze to get it done. You always can tap on the passenger light or snug the cable between the light and the body. Other option could be tap behind the passenger light and ran the cable between the body and the frame toward the tire carrier swing point.
No matter what option you chose, always will be a chance of pinch the cable if not properly secured.
