Help Needed After New Installing PCM

Just installed a new Wranglerfix PCM and just started getting codes U0168 and P0633 did some research and looks like this is something to do with the SKIM but I do not have the immobilizer key on my Jeep (i have a black key). Not sure what is going on with this.

Non related have some codes 0058 0057 which are from 02 sensor problems that I have been trying to get rid of but thinking might just need a new CAT since the sensors are pretty new NGK sensors.

The u1068 and 0633 will clear themselves with about 30-40 cranks. There is no consistency as it happens to some and mot others and all pcms are programmed exactly the same.

The other weird one is some Jeeps have battery temp sensors snd some don’t and there’s no way of telling by the vin. We have the solution but don’t know when the problem will occur. Weird

As far as the 0057 and 0058, have you checked the wiring and connections going to the sensor?

Happy 4th of July everyone and may God bless America! 🇺🇸🙏🏻

I will keep an eye on the SKIM codes, I have only had about 10 cranks or so on the new PCM. Is the battery temp sensor normally located underneath the battery tray if there was one?

I will check the wires on the connectors, I will also try hitting the sensor connections with some contact cleaner and as well test the contacts with a multimeter.

Happy 4th! 🇺🇸

Not under, in. There is a hole in the middle of the tray that the sensor pops into from the top side. There is a wave spring washer that pushes it up against the bottom of the battery.

There is no rhyme or reason as to which got a sensor in 05-06. We've seen them with and without whether it is auto, manual, Rubi, non Rubi, swb, longer wheel base. Makes no sense.

I'm pretty sure mine does not have a battery temp sensor, or at least a malfunctioning one, because it always charged at 13.5 volts, which is well below the recommended AGM charge range of 14.1-14.8.

There was zero temperature compensation. It would charge at 13.5 regardless if it had just started below zero or after hours on the freeway in 90 degree heat.

Opening up the programming with HPTuners, it's clear it was pretending to adjust to the temperature, but it always assumed the worst case scenario and charged at 13.47.

I ended up adjusting it to a much more shallow slope, but as expected it always charges at the lowest (hottest) value.

I suspect what is listed as ambient air temperature in this graph is actually the battery temp sensor temperature. There was zero change in charge voltage as the AAT sensor and IAT sensor values changed.

I wonder if all TJs without temperature sensors have low charge voltages (13.4-13.8) because of that factory programming. I'm guessing it just defaults to the worst case if there is no signal.

I was half tempted to just make everything targeted at 14.4 volts.

I will take a look this week when I get some time, but I doubt the temp sensor will be there from what I can tell.

Did some looking and found the wire on the harness that connects Bank 2 Sensor 2 has some exposed wires. Seems like a tight squeeze be able to get back there to try any kind of fix. Any suggestions?

@Wranglerfix I am looking to purchase an 06 that is throwing a battery temp sensor code, but the dealer is telling me that there is no battery temp sensor in this Jeep. Is it possible that the PCM was changed out and not programmed for the lack of battery temp sensor?

There is no way to tell if you have a battery temp sensor without checking. I can repair that issue through the pcm.

If there is one, it will be directly underneath the battery in the battery tray. You’d have to pull the battery to see it.

Some TJs have them and some don’t, but all TJ PCMs seem to have the software to run them. Not sure how the PCM reacts to a bad temp sensor versus a nonexistent one, but without one it merely chooses the lowest charging voltage possible (aka the hottest temperature). It might be worth simply unplugging it and seeing if it reverts to normal (albeit lower voltage) charging.

You can also go in with a tuner and change the voltage setpoints, but that won’t get rid of the code. A tuner would actually also allow you to simply disable that fault code, but you’d want to make sure you’re charging appropriately first.

FIFY since it does not happen with the 97-04 models for some bizarre reason.

A similar issue with the security light in 05/06’s. Neither of my Jeeps have a skim module yet one of them lights up with the security key. God bless Chrysler engineering.

They are designed that way. The light illuminating means that it had a working SKIM at one time and it was removed or disabled in the PCM.

Does that imply that one could simply add the sensor to one that came without, and achieve higher charging voltages? Do they all have the harness connections?

I haven't had my battery out but I have a suspicion because I never see voltage over about 13.6.

No idea. We ran into it doing a trans swap and the new harness did not have the sensor connector. We equated it to being trans specific so I asked on the forum for the 05-06 models and it turned out there was no rhyme or reason to which had them and which didn't, or one that we could figure out.

Would it be location specific? Like how vehicles shipped to Minnesota come with block heaters but they don't for Florida? If I recall correctly the build sheets specify final destination.

If it is, that's fairly silly. Especially given how many rigs I've worked on that have block heaters.

If I am seeing P0517 (battery temperature sensor circuit high) and the dealer is telling me that he is not seeing the sensor under the battery, am I right to assume the following are the possible causes:
  1. Sensor was removed at some point
  2. Sensor is disconnected and possibly hiding under the battery tray (where the dealer cannot see it)
  3. PCM was changed at some point and not property programmed for the missing batter sensory
  4. PCM is having issues
  5. Anything else?

Sensor removed from existing harness that has a connector for it will throw an immediate CEL at first key on.
  1. Sensor is disconnected and possibly hiding under the battery tray (where the dealer cannot see it)
Have to be blind to miss that since there aren't many places it can hide.

Someone with a brain needs to stick their head in there and see if there is a connector for the sensor that isn't being used.

When I first got my LJR years ago I struggled with tracking down why I was only getting 13.3-13.5 charge readings. Only thing I could come up with was that I didn't have a battery temp sensor. At that time it seemed no one on the other forum I was using believed me and all jeeps were suppose to have them. Since then we've learned differently.

Mine was shipped to Wyoming, came with the block heater from the factory and no batter temp sensor.
