97 TJ Tan Hardtop Color Code

I have a PJN moss green and tan TJ.

For the life of me, I can't find the color code for the hardtop. Can anybody help? I've looked on the vehicle to no avail.

Trying to get touch up paint and clean this thing up!

got it. VKU. Not sure where to get that color from. Seriously thinking about painting it black.

My advice is trade someone that wants tan for a black one. Painting decreases the value in my opinion. But your Jeep, I could be wrong. D

I agree. When I first purchased my Jeep, it had a White hardtop. I hated it so I painted it tan. That White hard top is rare and I know of a couple of people that wish they had one. I also wish I had taken pictures before I painted it.

To the OP, it may be worth more to someone else as a Tan top. I think that the earlier ones were a different shade of Tan than 2000+

Yes it is a different shade of Tan. I was also thinking about painting the interior black too. But if this is the case, I could just paint it the original color again.

So what did you end up doing? I just bought a tan hard top, and am about to restore it. When I do, I want to paint the interior (which is white) to match the exterior. It came off a 97, so I'm betting that the code you found would work to match my color.

If you haven't done anything yet, you can take the color code and give it to a SEM paint rep, who can tell you which of their paints matches that color code. If they don't have one on the shelf, they point you to one of their nearest-to-you mixers, who can mix up a match. Others on this forum have done it to match the interior color of some early-model tan TJs.

I want to paint both the interior and exterior of the hard top black. SEM rep advised hot rod black paint which is kinda pricey but I've read SEM trim is great out of the rattle can. Prep and spray.

I haven't had a chance to paint the roof yet because my JEEP has been in the shop forever. the original paint on my 97 top is still very good however.

That paint is designed for interior trim pieces. You can do the interior of the roof with it if you like. SEM trim is for exterior pieces.

p.s. How did you find your paint code to be VKU? Was it on your build sheet, or did you find it somewhere on the hard top itself?

Thanks. Yep, I saw that one, but I don't know whether mine came off a Sahara, since I bought it from a yard. Fortunately, I haven't heard of more than one tan/spice color for a 97, so if the seller is right about the year it came off, I think that's my answer.

I think your best bet is to go to a paint shop and have them color match for you.
